Also all the vactrol based modules sound nice if they are overdriven. But I have to admit, that a simple guitare stompbox often sounds better. I use a Ibanez TS10, a Alesis Bitrman (in this case not the "bitr" part, but simply the distortion) and the tubedistortion emulation in a Dynacord DRP15. The basic trick for any kind of distortion is: don't modulate the distortion-module itself, but modulate the level and the frequency spectrum of the signal which is then fed into the distortion.
