If Dieter won't have the time to answer today, I'll have a look at the 
schematics at home.

Basically I think it should be not normal that the signal already 
distorts over 9 o'clock position. At the most gear I own the 3 o'clock 
position is where an input level is set to 100%. I'd also understand 
below 12 o'clock damping, above amplification, but 9 o'clock position is 
too low.

Maybe it is a designflaw which has never been detected, because they 
test only with monophonic saw or - even more undetectable - with rectangle.
