A-156 Quantizer - minor scale // melodic minor vs. natural minor scale

2012-11-19 by trincerone

When I first received my A-156 Quantizier, I got immediately fascinated by the several different modes, in which it can run; and by the musical options which derrive from that and from the use of different voltage sources (Seq, Theremine).

However, some issue caught my attention: the minor scale provided by the device is not the well-known and commonly used natural minor scale, but the somewhat exotic melodic minor scale (which is basically a major scale with a small third, compare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_scale ).

So, the commonly used natural minor scale is the following:

1 2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 ♭7 8

The melodic minor scale as produced by my A-156 when set to "minor scale mode", is the following:

1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 7 8

You can see that this is basically a major scale with only the third alterated to a small third.

1. Am I correct to assume that this configuration is the same for each A-156?

2. As I find the natural minor scale musically far more interesting, I have got in contact with the DOEPFER company, which was a very nice mail exchange. I was given confirmation that generally it would be possible to re-program the A-156, which is what I am going to let be done by DOEPFER.

For this reason I would be interested to know whether or not anybody else would be interested in such re-programming. I assume that for many users the traditional minor scale could be pretty interesting. As such re-programming involves fixed costs (such as changing the source code), this might be more attractive if users interested in that modification would consult DOEPFER for re-programming collectively.

Looking forward to your answers, best wishes to all A-100 users out there as much as to the DOEPFER team!
