Stereo LED VU Meter

2002-12-14 by Tim Stinchcombe <timothy@tstinchcombe.freeserve.co.uk>

Hi all,
Some may be interested in an alternative to the moving coil school of
thought on VU meters. Velleman make a nice kit (= soldering involved)
of a twin 10-LED VU meter. (Velleman kit no. is K4305:
www.maplin.co.uk part no. is VF91Y.) Fits really nicely behind a
suitably-drilled blank 8hp panel. I use one as the last thing between
my A-100 (takes the output from an A-134 Pan module) and my amp, so
that I may know if I'm in danger of turning my amp into toast (with
up to +/-12 signals floating around, when I started out I considered
that a real possibility!). Only downside is that because of a max of
20 LEDs all on at once, its a bit greedy on current (>220mA), so I
also bought a cheap transformer to power it separately. I've used the
Cliff jacks on it too, so it blends in nicely.
