thanks Dieter and James for your replies. it seems i expected too much of the octal switch module. anyway, indeed it would be very helpful in live situations. i might include one in my live doepfer setup.

    One of the usages I see for this module is to use it along side a CV programmer module (like our Synthwerks PGM-4X4 - http://www.synthwerks.com/pgm-4x4.html) to not only program CV voltages but also change patch cords for primarily live performance. We have designed a variant of our PGM-4X4 called the PGM-4X4S which replaces the pots on the standard module with jacks to provide a manual/gate/internal sequencer switchable 4X4 array of bi-directional switches for just this purpose too. Though useful in the studio, they are aimed at the live performer who wants to switch sources/destinations of parts of complex patches without having to re-patch cables live.
These switches, like almost all switches like them, will cause clicks or pops if you are switching audio through them. This cannot be avoided unless you have circutry that detects the zero crossing of the audio waveform and switches only then, or has VCA’s and does quick ramps between switch states, both that add quite an expense to the module. In a live situation, the switches would have their states changed most often between “songs” so these clicks would not be heard. -James
