Rear Access

2001-12-19 by buechlerjoe

My line mixer's audio inputs are on the rear panel. Individual out
sockets on my sample playback synth, that I would like to route
through the A100, are on the rear panel.

The Regelwerk's CV/Gate sockets are on the rear panel. The Spectral
Audio Neptune's CV/Gate sockets are on the rear panel.

I need front panel patch points for all this stuff, so I can
interconnect them with the A100. I have rack cabinet space available,
but my A100 frames are full. Doepfer doesn't make a rear access
module, but Analog Systems has the RS250 module, and Analog Solutions
has the RP08 module.

I'm trying to decide on the best solution. What has anyone else done
to address this? Here's some of my ideas so far:

-Add another 6U Doepfer frame, and make a patch module out of A100
blank plates. Fill up the rest of the frame with a second 3-VCO voice.
This would be nice, but would require a major investment of time and
money. I only just finished my 12U A100 cabinet recently, and I don't
feel ready to embark on a major expansion. I can't envision a
meaningful expansion that would fit in a 3U frame.

-Add a 3U Frac Rak, make a patch module out of a Blacet blank panel,
and add 4 other Blacet modules to supplement the A100. This is an
appealing option, but still requires a lot of time and money.

-Add a 3U RS Integrator or Concussor frame, with an RS250 or RP08
module or two, and assorted other modules: maybe the Concussor VC02
and SY01 for an additional mono voice. This would be off-the-shelf,
but still make a substantial demand on my bank account.

-Build a 19" patch bay in a Raxess 1U project box with mini-plug
sockets on the front panel. All of the patch bays that I've seen use
either phone jacks or TT jacks. The only mini-plug patch bay that I've
seen is an odd 1-1/2U size and is very expensive.

-Buy a 19" 1U patch bay that uses phone jacks, and get a handful of
mini-to-phone jack adapters. Cheap and easy, but I dislike using
adapters.
