Hi Neil,

Yikes! Nasty. If I remember correctly, wasn't your system secondhand? 
It might be interesting to see if you can establish whether the 
correct fuse was fitted to the power receptacle, if you can still 
find it in the melted remains, or see whether it had been tampered 
with/changed in some dodgy way. If I were you I'd contact Dieter 
directly: he may be able to tell you if anything similar has happened 
before, and maybe where you can get a new power connector, or at 
least the make (he might even be able to supply one, you never know!).

Hope nothing else was damaged, and that the smell disperses soon!
