From this and the fact something similar has been seen before means 
you definitely need to seek further advice/get to the bottom of it 
properly - just replacing the power socket without knowing the whole 
story would not be wise... I'm also a little confused about the 
source of the evil-sounding 'brown liquid' - is it from the mains 
transformer (big black square box on PSU board, marked 'Hahn' amongst 
other things), or the power socket itself (with the switch, fuse, and 
into which the mains lead plugs)?

No, I don't think I did, but good to hear you sorted it all out. And 
talking of off-list email, did you get the brief one I sent last 
night, about possible replacements for the power socket?

Doepfer carry a page of email contact addresses  - whenever I've sent 
one to 'hardware@doepfer.de', it has always been Dieter who has 
responded. Depending on what he says, I think you should brace 
yourself for the possiblity of having to replace the whole PSU 
(erk!), but since it should be possible to replace the power socket 
separately (i.e. not have to buy the whole back panel) you should be 
able to keep costs down that way.
