My new year's direction: I'm tending to split my activities between live analogue jams at home, recording directly to my PC, and a shift of focus for my live gigs, towards a more digitised version, with patches set-up and structures more pre-determined, rather than analogue improv. My analogue set-up consists of TR-808, "Super Knobbulated" (extensively modified) TR-606, ARP Axxe, SH-101, recently aquired Doepfer modular system (basically a two oscillator synth with A-155 sequencer), borrowed Juno 60, Frostwave MIDI-CV and din sync converter. Digital set-up: MPC-2000XL, S-2000. Used in any situation: Evolution MIDI controller with knobs on, Sherman Filterbank vers. 1, Alesis Quadraverb, Allan and Heath's GL2 mixer, Roland system 100 4 channel mixer with spring reverb, Frostwave ring modulator, Moog Sonic 5 LP filter. Perhaps I will get into sampling my analogue patches for live use. I haven't tried it yet. I don't know whether to sample the basic waveforms, or at some later stage of patching complexity. I guess sampling the modular patches is kinda paradoxical. I'll have to just explore and see what sounds I can get. It will be some kinda analogue/digital hybrid. I'm happy, as long as it sounds good in the end! Maybe I will also get a rack synth I can tweak, like a Nord or a Waldorf, particularly for live use. I am keen to improve my hard disc based recording facilities, so I am looking into getting a kick-arse computer (probably a PC) to do more mutli-track work, and incorporate more live instrumentation into the mix. I have a band, called hiFLUXforce, and other collaborations, in which the follwing gets put to use: Webo SH-3300 old style organ, Marshall JTM-45 amp (guitars), Roland SPD-20 Drum interface and small V-Drum kit, Octopad II pad to MIDI converter (hooked up to sampler or sound module). I'm also wanting to get into recording horns and vocals - everything! Like to get a condesor mic and nice outboard mic pre / compressors. I have also put out a compilation of Melbourne produced tracks for the first release on a newly created label, Well Worn Records, which a few friends and I have put together to contribute to the community here in Melbourne, and abroad. This first disc, called "Machinecraft", spans many styles, all groovey as heck. If you want to get a copy of this CD, they are available via post anywhere in the world. You could just send me $12US. Or $24 Australian, and I'll get it to you. This year, well - right about now - I'm working on the second release for Well Worn, which will be drum'n'bass and related tunes from Rowbatraft -one of the contributors to the Machinecraft compilation. Any suggestions? Cheers, and best wishes for the new year and beyond!
