I believe I can answer that! 'IDC' stands for something
like 'Insulation Displacement Connector', meaning that when you push
the plug shut to trap the flat ribbon cable, the insulation on each
wire in the ribbon is 'displaced' (meaning 'pushed aside', but in
reality it is cut both sides of the wire) by the sharp pins in the
plug, thus allowing the pins to make contact with the conductor
inside (so basically contact is made without soldering!). Is that an
understandable description?
