Doepfer

Hi, Bakis.  Thanks for asking.  My real name is Steve, SHM is my 
initials, and I guess there were a lot of people using those 
initials before I signed up, so I ended as SHM1400.

I have a very small studio crammed into a tiny bedroom in my home 
(this explains why I am always whining about the size of new modules)
where I do a fair amount of jingle and commercial work using mostly 
Sonar and various soft synths and midi romplers like Yamaha S80 and  
Roland JV, with occassional Yamaha VL70, Nord Micro Modular, Prophet 
600 and Minimoog stuff thrown in.  I gig pretty regularly in the Los 
Angeles area with various jazz and progressive bands using mostly 
the S80 with a VL board. (I'm a keyboardist, but I love playing with 
a wind controller)

I got the Doepfer stuff a little over a year ago and I am still 
feeling my way with it. For most live or commercial stuff with a 
deadline, I still go back to my Nord Micro Modular, because it is so 
much quicker and easier. If I want a bass or lead sound played on a 
keyboard, I usually use something like the mini, although I am 
turning to the Doepfer more and more often. But I am trying to use 
the Doepfer for things that cannot be done with a regular keyboard 
synth, sound sculptures with long evolving sounds, usually no drums, 
inspired by people like Morton Subotnick and Barry Schrader. (with 
whom I studied at Cal-Arts way back in my misspent youth). I am 
getting closer, but I still have a ways to go (personal knowledge 
more than equipment). Right now, I have three portable cases, [or 
only two until I get my new power supply] :(

Listening to your track, I can tell you have done a lot of work 
integrating modular synth sound sculpture with straight ahead rhythm 
tracks. The drums move some serious air (The wind from my monitors 
mussed up my hair when I turned it up.)  Do you remember what you 
used to make the main bass sound?  It's a very unique sound. I am 
looking forward to hearing your CD.
