two cents:
1.) The soundquality is ok for the price. Preprocessing (EQing, audio 
compression) of instruments signals can be recommended. I you have 
enough modules, you can do these jobs with the A100 itself. The pre 
processing has to be done before(!) the envelope follower. If you do not 
preprocess with external equipment, then you have to put an insert in 
the signal path of the module between preamp and the envelope follower.
It is quite simple, because there are already two jacks for audio out, 
which can be used as audio-out and env.follower-in. I described the 
modification in my book.
Perhaps could Dieter post the modification on the hidden diy page.

2.) I personally found the envelope rates of the follower too slow. So I 
changed the corresponding capacitor (I do not remember the number). If I 
need longer rates I use the A177 slewlimiter. The combination of A119 
and the A177 has the advantage that I can control the attack and the 
release of the created envelope seperately (very useful for compressor 
like applications).
