Doepfer

Hi Thomas,

this is my favourite subject: filters! And even better: I will not hide what 
I liked about four filters I owned from Doepfer! So, let's start my 
completely subjective comment.

First: mighty A-108. Description: fat, but not Moog warm. It reminds me on 
Roland System 100 model 101 filter when making bass sounds (I owned Model 
101, and compared it directly to A-108. I even have a bass sample done with 
both. They sound very close in that sample.) When cutoff is more open, it 
has even a glimpse of legendary SH-101 - the most sinister filter ever if 
you ask me (notice I did not use the word "best"). Also, A-108 is very 
punchy - I started the thread on AH about how to get punchy VCA (after 
hearing Arp 2600), just to discover that explosiveness on A-108. This filter 
might take over "filter techno crown" that resides somewhere in Roland 
family, probably with SH-101 :-)

Second: WASP from Doepfer. You said: cheap sound, and that's exactly how I 
felt when I returned it. But it would be great for big loop sweeps in your 
average house club. Dirty energy.

Third: A-102. Pleasant, mild character. Kind of EMS. No bite. But... Chaos 
starts when self oscillating it, and FM-ing. Unbelievable range of ringing 
wierdness, not likable all the time. One of those things that I felt were 
90% there, but "no cigar", because something is constantly missing (or 
rather say - too much is there). Just like FM NovaMod I did on my SH-101 - 
if only I could remove 10% of the sound, it would be pure gold. Big miss on 
A-102 - lack of resonance control by CV . Why making filter with wacky 
resonance behaviour, and not being able to control it? If A-102 had that 
input, I would have kept it (instead of CV3 input). I guess it's not late 
for version 2 - I promise publicly to buy that one.

Fourth: A-109. Sweet! But it's Curtis, so I will not talk too much about it. 
Pleasant, polite, not too fat. I will probably sell it in the future, when I 
get...???

My next filter buy: Quad Lowpass Gate (I checked samples on Cynthia's web 
site, and I can only say: where have you been all my life - filter, of 
course:-)

So, again: this is completely subjective comment! ("One man's stream is 
another man's poison" - or at least something like that, verse from Giant 
Sand)
