Doepfer

Back at CalArts on the 200 system we used to do it with a custom box 
(built by John  Payne, I think) that basically recorded 8 sine tones 
of different frequencies to a tape track, each amplitude modulated 
by the control voltages you wanted to record.  The control voltages 
were decoded by taking the output of the tape track and sending them 
through a mysterious circuit that was most likely a set of bandpass 
filters and then a set of envelope detectors. In this way, you could 
get 8 tracks of voltage control on one tape track.

While this was good at the time, I'm not really sure why anyone in 
his right mind would want to do this today.  It seems so much easier 
and more precise to use a midi sequencer playing midi control change 
messages through a multichannel midi to CV converter. But then 
again, nobody has ever accused us modular synth users as being 
particularly sane. So, have a go and be sure to keep us posted on 
the results.
