You got me there! Of course a wide frequency range is needed to offer
a better result than 
the amplitude tracking. I am not familiar with the A-196, so all
conclusions were purely 
based on a healthy mix of  semi-theoretical assumptions and pure
speculation... ;-)
However, this book was very effective: 'Signal Processing, Speech and
Music' by Stan 
Tempelaars published by swets&zeitlinger.
About the lin/log converter: It might probably be more effective to
get a hold of the 
schematics of a proper frequency demodulator and build it together
with some of my 
solder-sniffing friends.
