but, realistically, i suspect we`ll have to make due with our own locally 
devised solutions. again, here in the u.s., an am radio is almost more versatile 
than a sw unit due to more broadcast activity and very similar atmospheric 
effects. 
for the noisy portable output, a typical problem with portables, maybe a bit 
of lp filtering ? i`ve found that useful but it also depends on the effect you 
are looking for, in some cases, the extra noise might not be a factor.
