 Hey, I'm not sure...but I suggest a visual inspection of the 
socket.  What you are experiencing should not happen, as you know.  
Inserting a cable into the Gate In socket SHOULD disconnect that 140 
module from the system bus.  Try inserting a cable while the module 
is out of the rack and look at the pin contact.  It should lift up 
when a jack is inserted fully.  Test with a Volt Meter if you have 
one.  For the 140, when a jack is inserted the two legs on either 
side of the pin contact should not be connected.  You may need to 
bend the contact up or down, compare it to other sockets on that 
module or another module which you know to work.  Other people on the 
forums have suggested pushing the pin contact down with a screwdriver 
or something similar, just enough so that the contact lifts when 
plugged in.  BE CAREFUL as bending to far up will cause no contact 
and too far down will make it always contact.    Anyway, a 
replacement socket should be available from your distributor if 
needed.  

There are many comments about the Doepfer style, CLIFF brand 3.5mm 
sockets.  Some hate them, I personally have had very few problems.  
But I'm pretty sure the only problem with your module is this socket.
