The problem is that the pots in the external joy sticks are special 
constructions (quite complicated double axises), so it is close to 
impossible to replace them if the values do not fit to the A-174's 
schematic.

A serial mouse is a kind of digital counter (like a rotary encoder). So 
perhaps one could try to build something, that connects a mouse to a 
Doepfer "Dial Electronic" (http://www.doepfer.de/de.htm).
