i want a compact portable modular effects system for playing live.

i don't mind getting somewhat diy - as long as it is simple. 
i don't want to get into custom metal work - i don't have the 
facilities and am better off just plugging prebuilt parts together.
i want to build something portable that is a halfrack size (half the 
length of a 19inch rack, so 9.5 inches wide, by 128.7mm high, by 
however deep i need to go for the modules and power to fit). i'm not 
interested in running from batteries. i have no clue what the exact 
requirements are that i should look for in a power supply,, could you 
help explain exactly what i should be looking for? could i possibly 
just use a spare computer psu i have lying around????

do you think it would be simple to build a buss board of my own to 
fit in a half rack (9.5 inch) system???

what are the dimensions of the holes in the module mounting strips?
where can i get these strips, do they go by any specific name??
