you are right, it is a matter of taste.
but there are quite some technical differences:

the a101/1 is vactrol-based and therefore you cannot use
it for filter fm. on the other hand the a101/1 sounds
smooth and warm. it performs great when you use different
input signals simultaneously. i'd say that the a101/1 is a
beautiful sounding filter.

the a106/1 can be used for filter fm, offering a different
sound range than the a101/1. the a106/1 starts to sound great
when things get rough, it is definitely not a filter for smooth
applications. you won't be satisfied by the a106/1 if you want
smooth and creamy sweeps on pad-sounds, but you will be pleased if
you want to add a harsh flavour to drums and things like that.

so it really depends on your desired application which filter
is the best for you. both are imho very good.
