So basically a bit of common sense does the trick. And a voltage meter, 
if the previous fails.

OK, that's a reassuring piece of information. This I suspected, though.

I don't quite understand why (extreme electricity newbie as well), but 
I'll keep that in mind. Not having any stereo cables that fit also 
helps, of course.
