I have just received my latest module and though I'd share my initial
impressions.
Speed of service and communications have been excellent. I made my first
enquiry at the end of July and received my module 6 weeks later. So no
complaints there.
First impressions. Excellent packing containing a very nice looking
module, ribbon cable (too short for my custom rack but long enough for a
G6), mounting screws (always nice to see) and a two page information
pack.
I had to remove a couple of modules to try it out so it went into the
bottom left corner of a Doepfer G6 rack. The info pack has a clear
diagram to ensure that the ribbon goes on correctly. Comment number 1;
the mounting holes do not conform to either the Doepfer or Analogue
Systems spec which means I have a gap either side of the module. Not a
big deal but does affect the appearance.
The info pack has a labelled panel drawing (as per website) and the
connection details. Comment 2; I would really have appreciated a manual
of some kind. Although I've had my Doepfer, Analogue Sys. System for a
while I have no experience with Serge kit and some starting suggestions
would have been useful.
Started off by injecting a ramp wave in and listening. Played with the
various controls and started getting some nice sync type tones. Added a
single LFO to modulate each of the CV's and then both CV's (love the
pull for expo curve on these pots) again some really interesting tone.
A hour later and I have not tried using it beyond this type of function,
would appreciate some guidance, The website
http://www.bananalogue.com/vcs.html suggests that the VCS can be used
as; VC Transient Envelope Generator (can see how I would do that), VC
LFO (and that), VC Oscillator (yep), VC Non-Linear Audio Processor (I
suppose that's what I've been doing so far), Envelope Follower (not
sure), VC Pulse Delay (?) and Sub-Harmonic Generator (not sure although
it was creating additional tones when I ran a sequence through, I don't
understand the mechanics) so far a very happy man and looking forward to
hours of fun.
With luck more Serge based modules to come? I do hope so.
