Re: getting a wider sound

2006-01-27 by Pierre Zeeman

At a guess, the ms2000's is some sort of ensemble effect and probably works
by use of delay lines. The ensemble effect was originally designed to
(cheaply) emulate unison. So the best way to achieve this effect would be
via some sort of stereo panned unison. You could so this via multiple
detuned voices mixed to various positions in the panorama spectrum. This
would require a lot of modules (oscillators, mixers, and sundry controllers)
but would undoubtedly give a very rich and convincing effect. The next best
would to try copy the ensemble effect itself. The easiest way to do this
would be via some combination of extra oscillators and bbd modules (using
cross feedback). The limited bandwidth is less significant at shorter delay
times and could actually help smear the signal.

As far as using an allpass filter is concerned, the only one in the doepfer
range, that I am aware of anyway, is in the a107, which is a fairly
expensive module, and I have no idea of how good it sounds. You, could, to
some extent anyway, mimic an all pass filter by feeding all of the
simultaneous outputs of a multimode filter into a mixer. You'd probably
need one for each side, though, as you'd want to emphasise and de-emphasise
complementary frequencies in each channel and it would probably take a fair
bit of tweaking to get the effect you're after. Mild comb filtering can
also work pretty well as a stereo widener, as can a notch filter on each
channel (I often use a static phaser for this sort of thing). But all of
these would skew the signal in some way rather than spreading it out...
