Here is an example I made

Mono material is subjected to an all pass filter (1). Dry signal is passed 
to the left channel, and phase shifted one to the right channel

When you hear that the sound is centered, the cutoff point is either above 
or below the range of hearing, or outside the range of the sounds themselves
