yes, doepfer sells only assembled modules and the
basic systems always come complete with a frame and all
modules mounted.

difficult question. i would say that the basic system is
a good starting point.

you don't need the a191 for controlling your modular with
a midi controller, the a190 offers this functionality too.
but if money is not an issue, i'd recommend the mcv24.
the mcv24 is clearly the better choice, it is more powerful
and a lot easier to handle imho.

Thinking of getting a a-100 basic system

2006-04-18 by Andrew Capon

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking of getting an a-100 basic system which I want to drive via
midi.

To start with I am just after a mono synth, maybe in the future
something more.

I am new to this and have a few questions, sorry if they are silly!

Could it be possible for someone to help me with these please?

1.	Do these come ready assembled in a case?
2.	What extra modules would you recommend, or is the basic setup
good?
3.	I need to use midi controllers such as mod wheel/aftertouch etc.
I think I also need an a-191 as well as the a-190 for this
functionality, is this correct? Or would it be better to scrap the a-190
and a191 and go for a mcv24 for future expandability?

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andrew,

Im going to go against the grain here, and recommend that you dont get a
basic system.

Doepfer modules have moved on a lot since the BS was put together, and i
believe that youd do better selecting your own system, and taking advantage
of the more exotic modules now availible.

You can also leave some space in the case, and then when theres another
module you fancy (there will be for sure) you dont have to get a new case
too.

I know at the beginning it can seem daunting, but if you slog at it, and
then post your suggestions here, then you can make sure youre not making
mistakes.

I personally wouldnt recommend the mcv or the a190/191s, but i know others
have been getting on fine with both. In my own system i use a Kenton.

Hello,

May I suggest for a basic system:

Top Row Left-to-Right:
HP2 Blank
A-118 Noise
A-111 High End VCO
A-111
A-111
A-114 Dual Ring Mod
A-138C Polarizing Mixer
A-108 VCF8
A-131 Exp VCA

Bottom Row L-R:
A-190 Midi-CV
A-165 Trig Mod
A-146 LFO
A-156 Dual Quantizer
A-148 Dual S&H
A-170 Dual Slew
A-180 Multiples
A-141 VC EG
A-140 EG
A-101-2 Low Pass Gate
A-139 HPA

The combination was inspired by the ARP 2600, but lacks the reverb.
On the other hand it can do so much more. You have 3 Oscillators
with hard and soft sync, all 4 waveforms, linear FM, and pulse width
modulation. The polarizing mixer enables waveform addition AND
subtraction. You have 2 different filters, one of which gives 4
slopes of lpf and bandpass simultaneously. You have two different
VCA's. Five modules actually give double of the same function. You
have midi in. ...and the Headphone amp provides a safe output
voltage for external devices.

In a portable case it's good to go!
I'd send a graphic here but the list won't permit.

Planning different configurations of your own system is going to be fun!
Consider the other suggestions from the group, too.

Good luck,

sfrules
