bad news about the A102 EMS diode filter...(from doepfer)

2002-03-05 by bakis Sirros

DIETER SAY:

"Latest information concerning the EMS filter. EMS
wants 2500.00 Euro
basic
licence plus 50.00 Euro + VAT licence fee for each
single A-102 module.
As our
estimated price for the A-102 was 75.00 Euro the price
would double to
about
150.00 Euro (our price 75.00 + 50.00 single licence
fee + 25.00 divided
basic
licence fee 2500.00 for about 100 pieces). I don't
think that the
customers are
willing to pay that much I don't see why EMS should
earn the same money
as
licence fee as the manufacturer (Doepfer). In addition
EMS will only
allow that
we call the A-102 "EMS filter" but they do not allow
that we mention
that the
module has the same or similar circuit/sound as the
EMS filter. It
would be
prohibited that we compare the sound/circuit somehow
to the original
EMS filter.
So I think that we probably will not offer this
module. You may put
this
information to the news group if desired.

Best regards
Dieter Doepfer
Doepfer Musikelektronik GmbH"

If I wouldn't know Mr. Ludwig Rehberg, I couldn't believe it!
I think there are enough good filters for the A-100, I prefer one filter less
for us than one cent more for EMS.
best regards
Axel

I think there is the possibility to pre-order the A-102. When 100 orders are
counted, Mr Doepfer could make the deal with EMS. It would be a limited
edition like our Big Briar Analog Delay!

Plain silly!

2002-03-05 by Andreas Lindholm

I think you should give Dieter something from us user to respond.

Since I don't see that EMS are making any such filters for the Doepfer
modular(or any other for that matter) they will not gain anything by denying
us the option of buying it. It is indeed fair in some aspect that a fee
should be paid if the design and the parts are identical, but setting an
ureasonable amount will also result in no sale, thus no money for EMS. So
reasonable would be to require a sensible royalty fee somewhere around 25%
of the cost of a module.

The other way to go is to alter the filter. If the design is improoved with
say a switch for different slopes (not sure what EMS slope is) say adding 18
db to the standard. If also adding something like notch out. Then it is not
EMS filter, but something that CAN sound like the EMS. To state things in
plain Doepfer could then go the route and say "due to legalities doepfer
cannot instruct users as how to obtain that sound, but it is possible"...

Not that I would buy the module anyway, but I'd like to help if I can.

/Andreas
