power balance + general questions

power balance + general questions

2006-06-18 by cera

hello,
i recently purchased an A-100 system (this is the first modular i've owned),
and i want to make sure i've got everything right before powering it up...

it looks like i'll need to pick up an A-100AD5 adapter before connecting the A-191,
and a 2HP blanking panel (is this necessary before i start it up the first time,
or can i add that in a few days without worrying about it?)

i'm also not sure how exactly the top & bottom need to be balanced...
i went through the A-100 system calculation spreadsheet, and as it stands,
i currently have 250mA @12V in the top & 310mA @12 in the bottom,
as well as the extra 50mA @5V in the bottom for the A-191.

i didn't see anything saying that the top & bottom have to be exactly equal,
but i could use a little reassurance :)

i've posted a copy of the excel sheet w/ the specs of my system at:
http://www.c3ra.com/A100_Sys-cera.xls

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,
-mark

Hello Mark, Doepfer recently has introduced a new power supply which
is more than enough for your modules. Even if you have the old one
(650mA) it'll be just fine. Place the modules within the frame to
your musical needs - there are no power issues in this respect. Mind
you, it's a good practise to place CV modules (EG LFOs) closer to
the PSU rather than moules which carry the audio path (VCO, VCF...).
The PSU *could* introduce hum to the audio path.
The blind panel is to keep away dust, unskilled fingers and for
aesthetical reasons. The system itself can be used with it's tooth
gaps.
Yes, you'll need an A100AD5 to power the A191. This thingy will be
connected to the bus board like a module (mind the orientation!).
Have fun with you system! Regards, Ingo

AW: [Doepfer_a100] power balance + general questions

2006-06-19 by Dieter Doepfer

The upper and lower row do not have to balanced. Only the total current
(i.e. the sum of upper and lower row) has to be less than 650mA for PSU1 and
1200mA for PSU2.

Provided that there is no 5V supply in the system (A-100AD5 or separate
5V-supply) you need the A-100AD5 to run the A-191. Pay attention that the
current for 5V is taken from the +12 line and has to be added to the total
current. In your example this means a a total current of 610mA (250+310+50).

Best wishes
