Lead-free solder

Lead-free solder

2006-06-21 by Bryan E Cornell

Not to bring up a tired old topic, but....

I was reading on some list or another that lead-free solder joints are more brittle and won't last nearly as long as regular solder. The individual made some * hopefully alarmist * estimate that the joints would last only a few years.

Anybody know enough to address this? Is the quality of Doepfer modules about to sink?

Bryan

To speak the truth ....

We don't know. The RoHS technology is new and there are no long-term tests
available. We changed to RoHS production end of last year and had no
problems so far. But since then only half a year went by.

Best wishes
Dieter Doepfer

P.S. We have still not RoHS compliant versions of some modules in stock
(mainly poor selling ones, e.g. A-129-3/4/5, A-191, A-197). After July 01,
2006 these will be delivered only to countries where the RoHS law is not or
not yet valid. But in the meantime ~ 90% of all modules are only available
as RoHS compliant versions. For modules that include an older circuit that
is not available in an RoHS compliant case (e.g. the CEMs, SSMs or the older
BBDs with 128/256/512 and 4096 stages) we will sell on paper (invoice) the
RoHS compatible module without the corresponding circuit and the circuit as
a separate spare part. The reason for this procedure is that it is allowed
to sell spare parts that do not comply with the RoHS directive even after
July 01, 2006. Of course we insert the spare part into the module if desired
:-)
