A-130 oddity / R2M oddities

A-130 oddity / R2M oddities

2006-07-21 by Michael Wagner

Hello. I recently started to build a modular system using mostly
Doepfer modules. So far, I am very satisfied with the system, but I
noticed a few odd things.

The first one concerns an A-130 linear VCA: It inverts the incoming
signal! If I patch an ADSR or LFO into the Audio In, the output signal
is an inverted variant of the input. Is this common behaviour, a
faulty unit or something else? And what could I do against it?

Furthermore. I've got two problems with the R2M:
- It doesn't output a CV2 (the pressure sensor Output).
The second problem is concerning the CV1:
I patched the output of CV1 directly to the 1V/O input of my A-111 and
patched the sine out directly to the mixer: And there is an annoying
crackling sound I hear. I played around a bit, tried the other A-111
and the M15. On all the same. As long as I keep the finger on the
ribbon, there's this crackling sound. When nothing touches the ribbon,
it sounds clean. Is this normal behaviour of the R2M or did I just get
a bad unit or something?
I uploaded a sample of the "crackling sine wave":
http://wasted.ch/mw/r2m_clicking.flac (around 500 K, FLAC audio file)

Good bye,
-michael

I don't have the schematics here, btu as far as I remember, the A-130
does invert the signal in fact. As far as I know the A-132 is not inverting.

How are the settings in Menu 2 (MIDI-Settings), Page 1 and Page 2?
Page 2 MUST be set definitely to something else than "off".

My system does not know this file format. You should try something more
conventional, like mp3 ;-)

But your description sounds like either your retrigger time is set
wrong, or the MIDI-1 mode is "note only" (without pitchwheel).

For standard ribbon stylee you have to use note+pitchwheel absolute.

AW: [Doepfer_a100] A-130 oddity / R2M oddities

The first production series of the new version of the A-130 (i.e. with
CA3080 instead of the Curtis chip CEM3381) the output was inverted. The
newer A-130 are not inverting. For audio applications the inversion normally
doesn't matter. For CV applictions the A-130 can be modified for
non-inverting processing. A little bit electronic/soldering experience is
required as one pcb track has to be interrupted and an additional wire has
to be installed. For technical details please send an email directly to my
address.

Concerning CV2 of R2M: you have to turn CV2 "on". Otherwise there will be no
output on CV2. For details please refer to the R2M user's manual. The CV1
behaviour is a bit strange. Do you have the same problems with the Midi
output too or only with CV1 ? I'd recommend to answer directly to my email
(hardware@doepfer.de).

Best wishes

Thank you, that solved it. I once again didn't expect the answer to my
problem to be found in the MIDI Event menu (as was the case with the
quantisation, where I initially couldn't figure out how to get rid of
it...).

Sorry... FLAC is great :-) I uploaded an mp3-sample:

To, that doesn't seem to be the case. I played around with all the
parameters a bit and none of them changes that particular behaviour of
my ribbon controller.

Thanks for the reply!
