Noise generator decision: 118 vs 117

Noise generator decision: 118 vs 117

2007-10-20 by terror_claw

Any suggestions from someone who has both? Pointing me to some sound
examples for the 117 would be awesome. I've searched and searched, and
I can't find any.

Thanks!

not what you want to hear, but: you want both. they're completely
different beasts and complement each other perfectly.

Here are some quick examples I made today. I hope the link works:

I am no expert at these kind of sounds though.

My A-117, which was purchased from SchneidresBuero this year, is for
sale. 40 euros plus shipping from Finland. That will be less than 10
euros to Germany for example. Price at Doepfer site is Euro 65.

Thanks for the samples. It's exactly what I needed to make my
decision. I think the 2osc and 6osc outputs swing the decision in the
117's favor because I love that bizzare cymbal sound. I do hate to
have to decide, but I'm down to my last 8 hp.

Actually, what to do with the last 8 hp could be a whole other thread.

Thanks again!

HP is valuable... A-117 would be more appealing for me, if it had
analog noise outputs too: At the moment I would like to experiment with
two independent analog noise sources, but 2 x A-118 = 16HP is needed
for that. (And two noise sources would in fact fit into a single 4HP
unit even with white, pink and brown noise outputs.)

hmmm... I like the A-117, but really never ended up using and sold, I still
have 2 A-118s and love them, simple but a great noise source and great
value!
I think an analog noise source is pretty essential in a modular, and the
doepfer one is very nice/usable. i would get that first, and a 117 later.
You may need white/pink noise for a sound, digital noise is totally
different-- not used the same way.
best,
phil
