David,

what are you going to be using the system for?

If you have filters you will want to be able to modulate them in some
way (envelope or LFO) and have a way out getting amplitude control (VCA
& envelope) for the final out put.

AW: [Doepfer_a100] Gusgus A-100 system

They have a big A-100 system with about 120 modules. I can make a list but I
assume that this list will contain ~90% of all available A-100 modules. I
remember that they use several joystick modules A-174 (~ 4 or more if I'm
right) for live control. In addition they use dual voltage controlled
crossfaders that were made as a special design for Gusgus. We consider to
release this as a regular A-100 module in 2008 (www.doepfer.de/a1342.htm).
They use this modules mainly in combination with the joystick module A-174
for manual panning of audio and control voltage signals.

Best wishes

David,

The modules you list below describes the mini system (1 row of modules),
except that one also includes the A-190. Only the Basic systems (2 rows of
modules) are available in suitcase versions, so I'm not sure what standard
system you're talking about.

If you consider getting the mini system I would advice getting it in a
standard size case - you'll quickly discover that you want more than one row
(84TE) of modules, and the price of the larger case isn't much higher
compared to getting a second 3U case later.

As I haven't heard the Gusgus album I haven't a clue as to their sound, but
I can see Dieter already posted that they have a fairly large system, so
don't expect similar results with just a few modules. Don't let that turn
you off modular synthesis, however, as you can still do some very cool stuff
with a small system.

Hi David, many would opt for a 2nd A111 for lin FM and cross modulation.

2007-12-05 by David Bulog

Hi Will
Thanks but Im a total beginner and got interested in modular systems
after using a few softsynths---the one I really like is FM8 and I
have decided to get the Doepfer to compliment it
Im on a budget so here is what I have come with so far
All Doepfer

A100Port case
A103 TB303 clone
A106-1 MS20
A111 VCO with CEM3340

A112 sampler
A135 Mixer
A141 VCADSR
A190 Midi -CV
A143 quad lfo

Are these are a good choice or would it be better to get a second VCO
as well---anything else I need to get a working system for midi out
from Pro Tools

thanks Dave

A155 sequencer question

2007-12-05 by David Bulog

Would anyone recommend the A155 to use with the A190 midi
Is this most popular sequencer for the A100 system
I want something a little different from my sequencer in Pro tools

thanks David

The A155 is of course recommendable. But I would recommend definitely
the A154 as addition. It fixes the "start with step 2"-problem and it
enables to stack the two 8-step rows to one 16-step sequence.

Re: [Doepfer_a100] A155 sequencer question

2007-12-05 by Silas Johansen

You don't need the A-190 to use the A-155, you can just as easily drive the
A-155 from an LFO. But the combination of A-155 and A-190 will let you sync
your sequencing to MIDI. I find the A-155 to be a great tool for
improvisation, and the "twisting knobs and pushing switches" approach to
sequencing let's you do stuff that would never be possible using software.

hi david,
i'd personally have a second vco, i must be one of the many as Ingo suggests, but as i think someone already mentioned, a vca is going to be indispensable, if not particularly exiting.
Deiter has designed an awful lot of useful modules and choosing is always agonising! let us know what you settle on.

2007-12-06 by David Bulog

Hi Will
These are the options that I would like to go for in my first Doepfer
portable suitcase system--prices are US RRP

A-190 midi-cv $ 230
EXTRA part for A-190 $22--Doepfer A-100 AD5 +5v adaptor
board $22
A-115 sequencer $375
A-112 sampler $230
A-111 VCO CEM 3340 $375
A-109 SIGNAL PROCESS CEM3379 $175 (almost a complete synth-all
that is needed is Asdr+ VCO)
A-141 ASDR $145
A-106 MS20 EXTREME $160

I think this will be enough parts to be usable?
and I can use the sampler as a second VCO for now until I can afford
another A-111

I really need this to do three things
1:Produce good bass sound that can be midi--DAW (PT and Logic)
2: A-115 sequencer receive Midi clock from DAW
3: Special effects ---hence A-112 sampler

My favorite synth records--Pink Floyd "On the Run" + Aphex Twin
"SAW Vol II"

cheers Dave

Re: portable Suitcase system help just starting out

2007-12-06 by Maxime

Hi Dave,

I think this is enough for what you need to do. However, some comments
about A106 and A141 :
A106 : I really really love this filter but I think it's not the good
one if you want fat bass growly sound. A106 is (IMHO) nasty, dirty,
aggressive ... Xtreme filter that will really take his sense with
complex/noisy sound inputs (to make them even more complex and noisy
!). But maybe that's what you're looking for and if you like Aphex
twins, you might like this filter ! I don't know how the A109 filter
behaves, maybe it's ok for bass sounds, but maybe you'll prefer to
have a module dedicated to filtering that fits your idea of bass
sounds better than A106.

A141 : A141 is VCADSR, and as you don't have many CV sources in your
system, I think you can save some place and some cash if you take a
simple A140 with time range switch and two outputs.

You'll probably need multiples. So take a couple of A180 or DIY.

> A-115 sequencer $375
I think you mean A155 =)

Hope that helps,
Max.
