Dave's "SAFE" project ( but not "playing it safe"...) ;-)

Dave's "SAFE" project ( but not "playing it safe"...) ;-)

2008-01-04 by Bakis Sirros

hello list,

several weeks ago, Dave Vosh offered me a dvd with a
live performance (including modular synths) of his
project "SAFE", and also his Safe" project's cdr
album(in return, i offered him my latest PW cd album).

we agreed that, if we liked each other's work, we
would make some comments in the a100 group.

(let me mention this, btw: this group is for
discussion of everything having to do with the a100
modular. that includes music and albums made with the
a100 also, not only a100 technical issues and future
modules requests!
a modular is a musical instrument above all...
some members seem to forget that, probably...?)

i have to mention that the dvd of the dave's SAFE
project live performance is really interesting, as it
combines live modular synth manipulation (doepfer a100
and wiard 300 series modular, including few other euro
modules), combined with processed banjo (!) and
acoustic guitar.
the tecniques used in proseccing the banjo and the
guitar were very interesting and also at some point
there was guitar playing with a bottle... (and in the
bonus dvd included with the cdr album, there was a
point where small balls were thrown at a stringed
instrument and then processing the resulting sound...
very "far out"...)
the overal sound was in an avant-guard experimental
and at times noisy style. that means nice!
anyway, it was a very interesting live performance and
some creative intruments playing.

the album of the "Safe" project was in a similar style
with 4 long tracks of mainly atonal music based mostly
on atmospheres and scapes. if you are into
ambient/experimental and noisy stuff, you'll like the
safe album for sure. i enjoyed it!

glad that you are actually using your a100 to make
music that results in a finished product David!

modulars are actually musical instruments and not only
endless noodling creators...

and a bravo for having the courage to take your a100
live on stage... :-)

best regards,
Bakis.

You should not underestimate what list members can and actually will
understand. However, experience could have told you that posting
reviews never started a discussion on this list or the other list
which get plastered with the same reviews. Your hint that you and Dave
“agreed that, if we liked each other's work, we would make some
comments in the a100 group” makes obvious that a possible
controverserly discussion is not intended but promotion. Actually I
wouldn’t make an effort to post if theses reviews would only show up
on this list but what really fourletterwords me off is that I have to
encounter the same reviews on so many other lists as well.
On this list it might be seen as a reward for the list’s mod
appreciated work but to request by other list members review for an
album to post on this list even though there have been quite a number
posted before goes beyond my understanding. Again, what actually makes
it worse is that you will most likely post the new P.W. review on
commission on various other lists which no one else is using that
unconstrained for promotional purposes. Anyhow, this post is likely
share the fate of message #13932 anyway.

Ingo,
you do not have to encounter my reviews in so many
other lists, because i post the reviews mostly to
forums, not groups. (i have posted reviews to yahoo
groups but i try not to be many...)
and forums have threads that you can subscribe or
unsubscribe from.
if a thread does not interests you, you just
unsubscribe from it. so you do not see every new forum
post in that thread. it is very simple to do.

Yahoo groups are different and that's why i try not to
post many review in the yahoo modular synth groups.
ok?
and one more thing to add: list members CAN promote
their music in my group too!! if their music uses the
A100 they are free to promote it here! simple as that.

independent musicians have to have some tools to help
their won works and not depend on huge budget
advertising campaigns made by few worldwide music
labels that control everything these days.
best regards,
Bakis.
