New user with MiniSystem

New user with MiniSystem

2008-01-13 by dollismine75

Hi all,

First of all, happy new year to you and your friends.
Sorry for my bad english.

I bought a mini system, and it's a new thin for me because I used
some synth like Korg polysix, Triton Studio, rhodes,...

I'm totaly lost with my MiniSynth, it's totaly new for me, So sorry
to bored you with my "newbie's question"

I try to do a simple sound Bass and to control it with a midi
keyboard, but impossible for me to do this one correctly.
I don't understand why the ADSR doesn't function correctly.
I mean that I want to do simple sound Bass.
I use one VCO (sine)but the sound doesn't stop when I stop to play a
note.
How I can do for that ? Is it possible to have a simple picture of
the correct patching please ?

I know it's a very simple question for you, but I try to understand
correctly. All start one day !!!

Thanks for your help ;-)

Could you please list your modules? It will be easier to help you if we know exactly what
you have.

Hum sorry.
Its a typical minisystem config.
A190 (midi CV interface)
A118 (Noise)
A110 X 2 (VCO)
A114 (Ring Mod)
A138 (Mixer)
A120 (VCF)
A131 (VCA)
A140 (ADSR)
A145 (LFO)

I think in this matter, it's a problem with gate or retrigger. The
sound doesn't stop when I stop to play my keyboard. Increase or
decrease RELEASE doesn't change the sound.

The VCA Gain kontroller has to be at zero - or the sound won´t die
away when you release the keyboard. (ADSR->VCA)

Re: New user with MiniSystem

Oh, I don't use VCA for the moment.
Ok, I explain my "simply" patch

Midi out of my master keyboard in midi in of A190

I choose a VCO sine ---->into Gate of ADSR module
And headphone in Output of ADSR module

Keyboard controls correctly the nute of note, but the ADSR seems not
function correctly (no effect when I turn the release knob for
example)

Re: New user with MiniSystem

2008-01-13 by Keld Sørensen

The basic patch is NOT like that:
Keyboard CV(MIDI CV)->VCO CV in, VCO(sine)->VCA in1, VCA out->
Amplifier, Key/MIDI gate-> ADSR gate, ADSR out->VCA cv1 in. This
should work. You can´t patch the sine to the gate in of ADSR - it
will trigger the ADSR at audio rate - but I guess that´s not what
you want. I think you should read about analog synthesis (doepfer
has a couple of books on their website)

Ok Keld.
It function perfectly (but the global volume is very little...)
i will try to undestand all the use of each module (and think to buy
a book !!!)
Thank for your help, I have to work hard now ^^

Re: New user with MiniSystem

This page has a lot of basic to complex
patch examples. It is very well laid out
with sound clips

http://www.modular-planet.de/modularplanet.html

It would be helpful to start doing some reading
on the basic building blocks of modular synthesis.
Once you have a better understanding of the
audio and CV connections you can begin to get
more creative. I hope this helps.

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Re: New user with MiniSystem

2008-01-13 by Silas Johansen

Welcome to the exciting world of modular synthesis. There are some
nice and useful patches to be found on
http://www.modular-planet.de/modular-planet-survey.html - generally,
you'll have to patch CV1 of your A-190 to CV1 of your VCO's and gate
out from A-190 to ADSR gate in to make them work - I suppose the
reason why you don't see this is that people use different MIDI to CV
converters, and to anybody with a bit more experience these
connections are obvious as they're more or less always needed.

Once you get the patch Keld suggests to work the next thing to try is
to insert the VCF between the VCO and the VCA. Pulse(square) or saw
out from VCO to VCF audio in, output from VCF to VCA. You might also
want to patch the second output from the ADSR and/or an output from
the lFO to a CV in on the VCF (use CV 2 and/or 3 on the VCF to have
control over how much the ADSR/LFO should affect the filter).

One more thing... You might want to replace the ring mod with a
multiple as that will allow you to patch CV1 of the A-190 to both
VCO's and perhaps also the VCF. Much more useful in my opinion. Why
the basic system doesn't include a multiple is a mystery to me.

Experiment - that's a big part of the fun with a modular :)

yes, experiment indeed.
but, try to avoid connecting an output to an output.

Re: New user with MiniSystem

Hi Silas.

The only reason for not mentioning the filter in my patch - was that
dolsimine used a sine wave - no need for a filter as that waveform
has no overtones to be filtered : o)

P.S - you bougth my system - still having fun?....
Keld

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Re: New user with MiniSystem

2008-01-14 by Silas Johansen

Hi Keld,

I noticed that, which is why I specified using a harmonics-rich
waveform to feed the filter. Dollismine also asked about a patch
without a filter so no reason to include one until he got that to work
as it would only have complicated matters further.

I'm still happy with your old A-100 - it's the centerpiece of my
"studio" and I play it almost daily. I've added a sequencer, an
envelope follower and a CV mixer to sort of customize it to my needs.
It'll probably grow at the rate of a few modules a year over the next
few years, perhaps for longer. The MCV4 died on me and has been
replaced by a dotcom Q-104 and I'm considering getting a few more
dotcom modules as well, now that I already got a PSU and power control
and interface modules.

I've also rearranged thee modules quite a bit - I'm at three and a
half rows right now, and I've tried to arrange them so the "standard"
signal flow is top to bottom instead of left to right. Sequencer and a
few other CV-sources on the top row, VCO's and some other stuff on the
next, then audio mixer, filters, signal processor and some others, and
the bottom row is mostly VCA's and EG's. I'm probably going to
rearrange them again soon, but it's moving to a new and bigger rack
once I find a way to get that one home so I'll wait until that is
done.

How's your dotcom doing? I noticed on the dotcom mailing list that
you've also extended that one a bit.

Cheers,
Silas

Re: New user with MiniSystem

Well nothing fancy - just 3 multiples to make things easier. And
I´ve added a spring reverb - old standalone box - matches the tolex
of the dotcom spot on. The dotcom is awsome - but not the modulation
freak that the doepfer was. But I realised that I was more into
Wendy Carlos/Larry Fast kind of music than Morton Subotnick :o)

How about posting a picture of your machine - I´d like to see what
has become of "my baby".

Keld
