Faceplate drilling advice?

Faceplate drilling advice?

2008-05-04 by partlydrone

Just before I dive in, does anyone have advice or experience of
drilling through doepfer module faceplates? I want to put an extra
switch across jumper J1 of my a112 to switch the LP filter in and out
(I quite like digital artefacts). Should I go through the palaver of
removing all the electronics boards first? Should I really though? And
will my cheapo dremmel-clone go through the aluminium quickly and easily?

RE: [Doepfer_a100] Faceplate drilling advice?

If I were adding a switch to a doepfer module I would remove all electronics and center punch the BACK of the panel before I drilled. I would run my machine at about 3 or 4 thousand RPM. I would use a stepped drill and deburr after making the hole.

I would drill the into BACK of the faceplate to AVOID scratching the front (visible) metal and graphics with the aluminum that will spiral out of the hole and spin at 3100 RPM! Place a clothe with a drill thru opening on the drilling table to avoid scuffing the fron of the panel. I would use a drill press to ensure that the hole was where I wanted it... I have done it with a hand tool as well, but it is harder to achieve good accuracy with hand tools. I would use a CLAMP to secure the faceplate to the drill table TO ENUSRE THAT I DID NOT TAKE THE CORNER OF THE FACEPLATE IN THE STOMACH OR THE EYE.

Another option is to punch the hole. This is much easier and safer, but fewer people have metal punches.

I would not use a dremmel tool. I am sure you have a friend with a proper hand drill or press. Or perhaps they have a hand drill in the janitors closet where you work or go to school.

i mean this really unfacetiously: i find it inspiring that there are
people out there who are so capable and diligent.

i just want to get a hole through with the minimum of fuss, even if it
looks a mess, my whole life is a botch. if i go at it with a dremmel,
will i basically get through okay?

How about this, instead of going at the 112 panel, just buy a blank 4hp panel and put the mod into that, install the panel next to the 112. If you are feeling confident put a mult in the panel too!

And I believe you can still get 4hp panels with 8 holes punched in them...

Re: Faceplate drilling advice?

I did made holes in the A199 reverb to put RCA out and also add switch for CV1 on A110...
and I'm not such of a DIY guy...

I just used a dremel like machine, the one that was there my father kept and used for
everything in the house for years...

I did block the panel in a drill table

AND I WENT FOR IT safely

no problem

How about this, instead of going at the 112 panel, just buy a blank 4hp
pane and put the mod into that, install the panel next to the 112. If
you are feeling confident put a mult in the panel too!
brilliant idea, will do that.

i need to buy a mult anyway for another project, will see if i can fit a
switch in a jack hole. if they are both the same size then life is
sweet.
