If I want a potentiometer to scale more finely, I should switch out  
the resistor in its path with one that has more ohms... correct?

Where does one purchase those little resistors of various resistance?

Any advice on doing this kind of work?  I may not go through with it  
but I'd like to get an idea of it first.
