Thank you, looks nice. You might also want to check out the 'Synth Secrets' series on the Sound on Sound website, if you haven't done so already.

Offline I like very much the book 'Synthesizer' by Florian Anwander. Required reading for A-100 users IMHO, no idea whether it's available in english though.

And of couse 'Electronic Music' by Allan Strange, if you can find a copy.

 Hi,

I don't know whether this is too off topic, but I'm sure any discussion of
synth programming would be relevant to modular synthesis. You could reply
direct to me at jbragg@hyperdust. <mailto:jbragg%40hyperdust.co.uk> co.uk or to the group if you think everyone
would be interested in your comments.

I have 2 Doepfer suitcases, but I have also just bought myself a Little
 Phatty for live performance.

I tried looking on the web for tips on synth programming, how to make
classic sounds like sync sweeps etc. But I couldn't really find anything.

So I've just tried writing a page on how to program a simple 2 oscillator
 synth with limited routing.

You can find it by going to my band page www.hyperdust.co.uk and clicking at
 the top on synth programming.

Some bits I was not very sure about, so if you are interested could you read
it, then send me you ideas. Things maybe I have missed out.

For instance using an audio speed oscillator to modulate things like pitch,
filter or waveform - what does that do, and how can you control it to make
either melodic sounds or stylish noise.

I could add any good suggestions to the bottom of my pages and add your name
 or callsign if you like.

Also I've done a short history of the synths I have owned over the years -
click on synth history at the top. I would be interested in other peoples
 synth histories.

 Peace

 James

I found a decent used copy on Amazon. It was $80, and the cover page
is torn out, but not missing, but it is an excellent book!
Every modular owner should at least browse through it, lots of ideas in there.

Agreed. AFAIK it is still made by McGraw Hill as an on-demand print. Price was around $ 60 a few years ago. I have the contact details somewhere should anybody be interested.

Where can you buy the pdf of Electronic Music, I tried to find it, but
couldn't.

The second hand prices are too much for me for a hard copy.

I don't mind reading straight from pdf anyway.

Thanks also for the pointer to synth secrets at SOS, I'll read those aswell,
they look good.

Here is the pdf for sale link.

http://ebooks.primisonline.com/cgi/showebook.cgi?
isbn=0390684635&bookType=unselected&fulleBook=true

you may have to paste the link into one line

I've never tried the PDF myself. I think some people complained about quality though the
original has small text and low grade pictures to begin with AFAIK.

It is a superb book because it goes quite deep - so even advanced synthesists tend to find it
enlightening. It does get a bit advanced a bit quickly so I keep suspecting it might be a bit
tough for someone not too far along.

Sadly Allen Strange died earlier this year.

Hi,

The title of the work and ISBN:

Allen
Strange, Electronic Music - systems,
techniques and controls, 2nd edition, Wm. C.
Brown Company Publishers, Iowa, ISBN 0-697-03602-2

Contact:

Times
Mirror International, London
Customer Service Department
Tel. 0044-1713-887 676
Fax 0044-1713-440 019

That's from the Doepfer homepage and I have no idea how good the information is. I contacted Mr. Strange directly a few years back and he kindly directed me to the publisher McGraw Hill. After much back and forth I finally got my copy. Cost about $60 IIRC. Now it appears to be more streamlined. If you go here:

http://www.primisonline.com/cgi-bin/POL_page.cgi?page=newindex2.html&context=pol

you can select the title, customize it and order it. They might also send you a pdf, didn't try that, dislike pdfs.

Hope that helps,

York

Re: My web-page about synth programming - Allan Strange

2008-12-16 by Wesley

Hello,

I'm currently reading this book and had to chime in.

Earlier in the year I attempted to navigate the online service to get
at least a .pdf, but was unable to find an ebook. McGraw-Hill may well
have added the option since then, which is good.

What is great, however, is the actual physical object. The '83 edition
is a phenomenal book, and the text and images are of a very
comfortable size and quality. The many diagrammes, reproductions of
performance scores (Rosenboom, Behrman, Ashley, Lucier, Chadabe, etc.)
and excerpts from patch books (2600,System 100, Axxe, etc.) are
essential to the whole of the book, as well as amazing and useful on
their own.

Mr. Kent's points about the depth and detail of the text are on point.
You could say the learning curve is exponential on this one.

If it can be afforded, I would say, after being about halfway through
the book, that the text is essential enough to pony up for the genuine
article. Information is information, but for me personally, a .pdf
would have just made me want to buy the real thing anyway.

Also, consider this: how much does a new college textbook cost these
days? $100? Usually more?

-Wesley

How bad is the quality? I have a hardcopy, but wouldn't mind being
able to read it anywhere w/o worry.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
