Doepfer VCS3 Oscillator module ?

Doepfer VCS3 Oscillator module ?

2009-01-26 by analog1k

Since there is already the A-102 Diode ladder filter (VCS3 filter)
is it possible Dieter to make a VCS3 type Oscillator clone?

Although the VCS3/Synthi OSC were so unstable and only good for
sound effects at the best of times.

I know there has been polls on new modules, but those suggestions
have been rather boring to say the least.

Perhaps a Trapezoid Generator can be made too. Would be nice to
have that VCS3 Osc, Filter & Trapezoid Gen in a Doepfer Modular.

being as all those modules are already available from Analogue Systems and were actually developed in collaboration with Robin Wood EMS I wouldn't think doepfer would want to bother reinventing this particular wheel...

I would rather hear from Dieter himself about this,
rather than coming from you! And people are always
re-inventing the wheel to some degree!

I know about the A-Sys modules, these new suggestions
of modules would have no place in my modular system, they
might be okay if you were building some sort of modular
hi-fi system, but i am not.

And VCS3's and Synthi-A's are far beyond most people's
price ranges...

The only advantage to Doepfer making these (if he could get the rights
to use the design as AS has) is that he would most likely make them
cheaper than the AS ones. The only way he could sell enough to compete
with AS would be to sell them cheaper. That of course would make the
profits less which would make less of a incentive to make them in the
first place. I would love it to happen of course because I think the
price of the AS modules here in the US is a bit steep. And the hole
offset problem means the expense of an added panel (or the drilling of
holes).

"I would rather hear from Dieter himself about this,

well you are a charmer aren't you? If you want to have a private discussion with him, maybe think about mailing him directly? One nice thing about this place is that it is a public discussion forum where users like us get to air their views on what modules might get made. Mine, whether you want it or not, is that doepfer should not waste their resources replicating products that already exist in eurorack format.

I am very familiar with the VCS3 and absolutely love its sound, but I have not yet heard the AS trapezoid or EMS filter. I don't understand your "hifi" comment, but I do I wonder what your exact objection to the Analogue Systems modules is? According to the manufacturer the AS95 VCO is pretty much a clone of the VCS3 VCO - and the other two modules are actually licensed from EMS. Do you not think they sound how they should? What do you want a Doepfer version?

Richard

Just curious, what is the the advantage of a trapezoid generator? It seems
musically inferior to an ADSR to me. Though the "ON" function is unique, I
can't think of a good application of it. And it can be easily emulated with
a standard ASR plus a comparator (plus perhaps a min/max selector), I
believe.

It's not just the envelope that makes ASys trapazoid generator a
useful module. It has a built in VCA, (which ignores the polarity of
the env output so you always get a pos signal gating), self cycles (in
very interesting ways) and when paired with the Synthi filter, it does
some very interesting very Synthi sounding patches. I've tried em,
had one in my system for a few days, but don't have one right now (not
enough space).
