Doepfer

Along with my main PC, my A-100 refuses to work.

I've checked the mains socket and cable, and they are both fine.
However, when I plug in the A-100, I get nothing.

I've looked in the case, having removed all modules, and there's
nothing happening. No LEDs illuminating. Dead. I'm presuming that -
even with no modules plugged in - the A-100 case has LEDs that light
up in the case, yes? (It's been a long time since I turned it on
without modules in it).


Can anyone help me out with some suggestions? 
Is there an obvious fuse for me to check out?
I'm going mad with worry that every one of my modules has been fried.

At this point, it's racking up as one of the worst days of my life.

Any help gratefully accepted.

*inside* the case for it like a fool.

Is it a 240v 5a fuse? Anyone got any recommendations on where to buy
one in the UK? All the 240v fuses I've found online are 'house fuses',
which I'm pretty sure are too big.

Fuse.  Very Very likely.  Cheap and easy part to replace.
 
It happened to me about 6 months ago.

Most of my G6s are the older type, and I have had need of Maplin part 
no. GL35Q in the past (these are 'T100' fuses). If you have the newer, 
toroidal, power supply, then according to the link Florian supplied, 
you are going to need GL55K, which is the 400mA rated one. If you have 
anything other than a bog-standard G6, check that link *very* carefully!

year. I presume that means a 230V 400ma T (slow blow) fuse: the GL55K?

This happened to me a while ago and after consulting the group 
Florian pointed me in the direction of the fuse (thanks Florian). I 
got some Time-lag 500mA fuses from Maplins (I'm in the UK too), 
they're pretty cheap for a packet of ten but I've never had to 
replace it since.

If it's the older version it would have started spewing out HORRIBLE 
stinking plumes of smoke from a melted mains smoothing capacitor by 
now and leaked hideous brown gunk over the inside of the back panel!

Then you would have had to spend hours breaking open the mains inlet 
and prizing away the fused and melted remains of the capacitor and 
the plastic housing from rest of the inlet, being careful not to 
crack and break the good bit of the housing, and then rewired the 
connectors back. Not forgetting working out a way to clean the gunk 
from the case while you're at it.

If none of that rings a bell then you probably have the new power supply.:)

text; the newer A100PSU2 requires the higher-rated fuse, and is easily 
recognised with the big round ('toroidal') transformer on it!

That problem actually relates to the IEC power inlet connector on the 
backplate, rather than the power supply itself, and could possible 
affect really old cases (like 10 years or so). I think these older 
cases are identified by the on/off switch being separate from the inlet 
connector itself; the filter in the inlet sometimes seems to go bad, 
hence the horrid sticky brown goo it may exude. The filter wasn't 
strictly necessary, and so later ones simply don't have it, and also 
have the switch integral with the connector.

I bought a second-hand case exhibiting these symptoms - with care it is 
possible to find a connector which is almost a 'drop in' replacement 
(and considerably cheaper than a new one with the filter...

If they are the first version G6 cases with the all-in-one switch and 
IEC inlet then it's only a matter of time before those big caps fail. 
Be warned! It's quite dramatic, but I don't think any real damage to 
my modules occurred. To be fair, Dieter realized the problem ages ago 
and changed the design, so you may have the old style PSU (650mA) 
with the revised IEC inlet (without capacitor). If not, I hope you 
have a well ventilated studio!

This happened to both my G6 racks in the same month last year - after 
10 years of use. I wish I'd recorded the sound of the capacitor 
fizzing and sputtering but I was too busy pulling the mains out  and 
running out into the street with my Doepfer in my arms so as not to 
set off the fire alarm!

Gotcha. Yup - mine's the big torus of coiled danger. 

I've also just noticed that (much like the letters on the ring in Lord
of the Rings) there are tiny, near invisible letters on my dead fuse
telling me it's a 250v T 400mA fuse. Note to self: get better
illumination for room.

Fuses now ordered.

I think the trouble with getting 400mA fuses is that they just keep 
blowing which is why I got 500mA ones. I think it was Dieter who said 
it was OK to use higher rated fuses.
