I believe you are right with the A-144+A-135 idea.
But what do you mean by adapt the A-138e for use with the A-101-9 ?

You can't, the same with the EML-101, no CV either.

For CV I think you need the A-144 + A-135.

I wonder if the A-138e can be easily adapted for use with the A-101-9  
Vactrol module?

The A-101-9 provides variable resistance controlled by CV. In some but not all cases it can provide the variable resistance an existing pot does, only put what the pot controls under CV control. I'm sure the manual describes it better.

The A-101-9 can be used only to replace a simple resistor. The A-138e uses
custom made potentiometers with additional center tap. It's not possible (at
least not in an easy way) to use the A-101-9 to make a voltage controlled
version of the A-138e.
