Hi Mikhail,

I recently bought a MFB SEQ-02 step sequencer. Its build quality is very good although I had initial reservations when I ordered it because, unlike Doepfer, the front panel is not made of metal - it's made of circuit board material. However don't let that put you off because when it arrived I was pleasantly suprised with the quality of the design and build - I love it! The SEQ-02 is only about 25mm thick as the circuit board is mounted parallel to the front panel. The controls are very tactile. It just oozes niceness. The only downside to MFB that I have found is the manual, it's not as comprehensive or clearly laid out as Doepfer manuals - a very minor point.

VCO vs DCO? I don't have either but have read that the DCO will not respond the same to higher frequency modulation such as audio (e.g. DCO 1 cross modulating DCO2). This should not be a problem for most applications - I'm going to get the VCO.

Cheers
Tony

MFB Triple DCO/VCO

2009-07-06 by Mikhail Novikov

Hello!

I know this is Doepfer group, not MFB, but there is no separate MFB
group so...

Recently I became interested in MFB Triple DCO/VCO. They look like a
good value for their price and 3 osc in this small size is cool. I
wonder if anyone had any experience with any of those. How is general
quality of MFB modules? Is DCO worth it? It is not much cheaper than VCO
and I am worried in might be much worse.

Best regards, Mikhail Novikov

I owned the Triple oscillator, but sold it again.
Soundwise it is ok, but I did not like the potentiometers; to my opinion
the action of the potentiometers is too light; it was difficult for me
to tune them in exact settings. And also an unintended slight touching
of the knobs changed the tuning, which never would happen never with a
Doepfer or AS module.

I Own a Triple DCO...to be honest, I'm not a big fan...my reasons:

1) personally, i think it sounds thin. something about the thickness of the waveforms just does not stack up to the A-110

2) weirdly it goes out of tune...and the tuning goes completely out. This might be because my rack is pulling too much power.

3) the FM modulation is HORRIBLE. it's not smooth and organic like the A110. it's grainy and un useable. We bought the MFB specifically as an oscillator to make FM bleeps (as opposed to regular tones), and it just does not cut it.

If you want an Osc to fatten up a pad, or thinken a lead sound, then this is great. But if you want an oscillator to really make some cool and completex sound, plus deliver the PHAT, get an A110.

...although having said this, I've spoken to many MFB users who are very happy with their product.

hope this help.

ROCK!

KARL.

Hello Florian!

Did you own DCO (VCO-1 AFAIK) or VCO (VCO-2)?

Best regards, Mikhail

Hello Mikhail

It was the "OSC-01". The problem with potentiometers is valid for all
MFB gear I had in my hands.

Hello Florian

I was asking to see if sound comment refers to DCO or VCO :)

Thanks, Mikhail

Hello Karl,

Have you tried triple VCO? I wonder if it has same problems.

Thanks, Mikhail
