Precision adder/Sequential switch/Sequencer question

Precision adder/Sequential switch/Sequencer question

2009-08-22 by palicki

Hi all,

Here comes a question regarding a strange muting behaviour of my A-151 Sequential switch.

I have a Precision adder (A-185-2), a Sequential switch (A-151) and two A-110's set up in the top row of an 9HE low cost case.

The CV output of one row of an MAQ 16/3 sequencer is connected to one of the inputs of the Precision adder (switch in "+" mode"). CV values from the MAQ are the distributed by the A-185-2 to both oscillators through the system bus.

I would then like to offset the sequence from the MAQ by using the Sequential switch and connect it into another of the Precison adders inputs.

But when I connect the O/I of the Sequential switch into another input of the Precision adder (switch in "+" mode"), and when there is no input to the Sequential switch (nothing plugged in into I/O 1 through 4), the oscillators go mute! The sound disappears completely.

No CV -> A-151 -> A-185-2 -> System bus = mutes A-110 = no sound!

Could someone explain what is going on?

Thanks,
Jacob

The inputs of the A-185-2 are very high impedance inputs to avoid any load
of the CV connected to it. If you insert a patch cable with an open end into
one of the A-185-2 inputs the input in question does not "know" which
voltage is applied and will generate a random voltage (usually very high or
low, i.e. ~ +12V or -12V). If the output of the A-185-2 is connected to a
VCO the frequency will go ~ 12 octaves up (or down) and it seems that the
VCO does no longer generate a signal.

The same happens when you connect an input of the A-185-2 to an A-151 socket
that is not addressed.

Remark: an open input is not the same as a grounded input (0 V) !

Best wishes
Dieter Doepfer

Mr Doepfer,

This explains why the A-110 sounds like they're muted.

Thank you very much for the explanation!

Best,
Jacob

You're welcome. It is possible to eliminate this behaviour if the inputs of
the A-185-2 are terminated by resistors to GND (e.g. 1MOhm). But this adds a
load to the input signal which we tried to avoid for the A-185-2.

These new modules are now available:

A-138m Matrix Mixer
A-183-1 Dual Attenuator
A-183-2 Offset Generator / Attenuator / Polarizer
A-183-3 Amplifier

Please ask your Doepfer representative for the availability of the new
modules in your country.

Best wishes

Any sign of the 138x Mixer Expansion, yet? I have only seen them available from Noise bug in the States and I don't really want to pay the extra postage and tax to import Doepfer modules back into Germany.

Yours Aye

It's been available for a long time by now. Ask from Schneiders Buero. That's where I bought mine.

hello stuadh,

the a138x mixer expansion is already available for
some months now, but only with a front panel without
any printing on it. you just need to state if
you want to expand an a138a or a138b with it,
in order to get it with the correct potentiometers.
you can also find the a138x on the doepfer price list.

best wishes

Hi folks,

138a mixer linear (CV) 32 euro
138b mixer log (audio) x 2 new 32 euro each
A172 min/max new 36 euro
A175 dual inverter 32 euro
A123-1 vc panner 53 euro
Doepfer A141 VC ADSR: 70 euro
Plan B M12 Vactoral Filter: 149 euro
Moog MF107 freqbox - minty - 200 euro
bugbrand postcard weevil - with audio out, this is the earliest version
of the current 3 VCO design, like this
http://www.bugbrand.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_15&
products_id=33
but with the older drawing pin style sensors - dunno what i paid for it,
make an offer if you're interested

Last but definitely not least, I am taking offers on a Chimera Synthesis
BC16, with inverter and extra cables and plugs - mint - they are rather
hard to get hold of, I waited nearly a year for this one

http://www.chimerasynthesis.com/#/bc16-patchable-synth/4529526548

I'm in Germany - post is pretty cheap from here

I might also trade for Plan B M23 and M39, Bananalogue VCS,

Richard

What is your general expectation for the going price of the Chimera? I"m
trying to get a good feeling at what you are looking for and then see if we
could possibly deal in cash or potentially modules.

Thanks in advance,
