Hi,
the Doepfer.de homepage is certainly the best source of information about their products.
A sequencer like Dark Time is certainly a useful addition as your other synthesizers will profit from it. So you can't go wrong with Dark Time. In order to enhance the sonic abilities of the Dark Time itself you might either wait for the apparently planned extension of the Doepfer Dark Line called Dark Matter (if I'm not mistaken). A concept you will also find with Analogue Solutions' Station X and Y (like Dark Energy and Dark Matter(?)) and Station Q (can be compared to Dark Time, in terms of product line). Check YouTube channel of rezfilter for indepth information and sound on these. - I hope no one is going to throw stones at me in this forum for suggesting a non Doepfer product ... ;-)
cheers
Jakob

More Dark Energy

2011-07-04 by Matt Miller

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Doepfer Dark Energy, my introduction to modular synthesis, and I love everything about it. I'm so glad I chose the Dark Energy over a Lil Phatty.
Now I am interested in other Doepfer products to expand upon the Dark Energy. The Dark Time is a candidate since it's made for the Dark Energy, and the color scheme matches. But I may be able to get more use out of a mini case with modules.
I don't have any particular sound that I'm trying to achieve. And I can get a wide range of usable sounds running the Dark Energy through my EHX pedal board. So I'm just looking for suggestions.
All input is welcome, and greatly appreciated!

Thank you everyone,

Thank you for your quick reply! I will check out the items you mentioned, if for nothing else to get a feel of form. I thought I had heard something about a Dark Matter product, but I couldn't find anything online.

I'll do a little more research tonight and see if I can come up with anything.

One of my Twitter friends suggested a mini case with a VCO, Mixer, Mult, Ring Mod, etc. I'm going to investigate this from the Doepfer.de site.

Thanks again

Hi T,

This came up a while ago:

Some routes to explore: the DE only has one oscillator, another one (or two)
will greatly add to your sonic palette. Same goes for a noise generator.

The DE filter is low pass so a multimode filter would also be nice.

As everyone who has done some modular synthesis will tell you, VCA's,
envelopes and mixers as well as multiples are what you end up missing.
Doepfer and other manufacturers have a lot of options there, for example the
A-143-X range of quad modules.

On the Doepfer homepage there is an example of an expansion system with two
mini-cases:

http://www.doepfer.de/Dark_Energy_A100_Mini_Combo.htm

Amazona.de has an interesting article about adding a mini-case to a DE:

http://www.amazona.de/index.php?page=26
<http://www.amazona.de/index.php?page=26&file=2&article_id=3322>
&file=2&article_id=3322

It's in German but perhaps the sound examples can give you some indication.

Have fun,

York
