modulargrid.net - new online rack planner

2012-11-16 by instantknut

Hi,
everyone who is interested in building a modular should check out my new online rackplanner modular grid.

I tried to build a HTML5 webapplication which should fix some of the shortcomings of the old flash based modularplanner which hasn't been updated for a long time.

Main features are
- a community approach where everyone can rate and upload modules
- a database where you can search modules by function
- compatibility for touch devices (iPad, etc.)

Of course most of the Doepfer modules are already available in the planner.
Plus a nice looking Doepfer style rack case ;)

I am happy for every suggestion, bug report or feature request.
Have fun, Knut

Looks super! The possibility to use patch chords would be nice (for saving patches).

Greets,

Richy's planner looks good too. Looking at the screenshots it looks like you include outbound gear like stompboxes (and patchchords). That is really helpful trying to remember setups.

Looking forward to see it!

Back to modulargrid:

I find it very funny that the essentials column on the front page is filled
with super expensive modules that are not really essentials. Seems like a
lot of users are lazy modular users that need loads of 'all in one' modules
to get the job done instead of using basic building blocks.
Essentials to me are VCAs, LFOs, EGs, S+Hs and oscillators...

Re: modulargrid.net - new online rack planner

2012-11-18 by instantknut

Funny or not, it's just an automatic generated list of the modules people dragged in there probably mostly fictional racks. Those "essential" modules are the ones the people dream about the most.
I also had expected that way more mixers and mults will show up. At least two Doepfers appear in the list, too.
Perhaps I should have given this list another name, like "popular modules" or "modules I dream about but will never own" ;)

Noticed that as well. I think it's more of a fantasy modular thing where
people can fantasize about the system they'd build if they were rich.

Yeah it seems like a fantasy modular feat. :D
Anyway I really love the site Knut. I put my current rig in there. And it
seems like a good tool to fool around with once I am remodelling the racks
again.. I also took the liberty to add some older Analogue Systems & Plan B
stuff that wasn't in the database yet, great feature!

You have to understand, there is much more of an influence from Serge and Buchla systems in euro now. Those system mainly have multifunctional modules. So while basic are great to fill in, you can't deny the usability of things like Make Noise Maths and Toppobrillo's Sport Modulator. Besides, there's plenty of Doepfer modules that are also multifunctional and complex. I couldn't live without my a-149 and a-199.

It's not about being rich either. I sold tons of keyboards and rack synths to build my system. But it's the best purchase I've ever made. No need to criticize people for being exited about all of the possibilities of euro! It's a great time to be into it for sure.

hmm... maybe i would say that some modular users are easily impressed by fancy module names...

maybe, some of the users that go for the impressive (and probably expensive) 'all in one' modules lack extensive modular patching knowledge...? i could be wrong though...

I wasn’t critizing anyone. I would be one of those that use a modular planner not only to plan my next purchase but also to engage in speculation. What if I had 10,000 dollar burning a hole in my pocket? What would I buy. It’s fun.

I think Ernst was just riffing on the fact that a list under the header ‘Essentials’ contains a lot modules that not everyone would consider essential. YMMV of course.

Re: [Doepfer_a100] modulargrid.net - new online rack planner

2012-11-18 by Jesse Buehler

Sadly, my planner is not fictional. :)

Including case I'm about 9,000 USD in with only 4 rows. Still, I couldn't be happier.

I think the thing as mentioned is, YMMV. Its not about lack of knowledge so much as the sound you're looking for. I have several complex oscillators because I love the sound of analog FM, wavefolding, etc. This was something I was never able to satisfactorily accomplish this with combining simpler oscillators and modules until I bought things like the DPO and Cyclebox mk2.

Don't take my observation too heavy Jesse. Just observing..
I love those modules also. But I was just surprised that column was called
'essentials'.

Hey,
I made some updates to the Modular Grid.
Most important: I have renamed "essential modules" to "popular modules" :)

Else:
1. There is a keyboard shortcut mode, so you can move and drop your modules with the cursor keys.
2. You can sort the modules after popularity in the module browser. Find out what is the hottest/hyped noise module in Euroland ;)
