pitch problems using a171 vc slew limiter

pitch problems using a171 vc slew limiter

2002-10-25 by duffnuff

i'm having problems performing simple portamento using the
a171 vc slew limiter. when i apply the a171 slew limiter to pitch
cv it results in serious intonation problems. i went back and
checked the a190's scale adjustment w just the a190 and an
oscillator, checking across 4 octaves w a tuner, it's fine.

seems my a171 will not pass cv cleanly regardless of slope. it
causes portamento, will adjust from slow to fast, but notes are
wrong.

when i patch the a190's cv1 output to the a171, then to the osc,
middle C drops 1/4 step, and intonation goes completely out of
whack. this occurs even when using only one osc. very
frustrating. completely unusable. that's w no slew applied. i
also taped the middle C key down and left it for several minutes
but no change in pitch during that period.

could this possibly have anything to do w using non-doepfer
osc's? i recall having to alter the scaling of the a190 when i
began using it w a pair of ASys rs95's. once the scaling was
adjusted they played perfectly together, except now when the 171
intercepts the pitch cv, then the a190's scaling wants to be
adjusted back down to doepfer's default position.

any thoughts? is there a bias adjustment i don't know about
within the 171?

I had the same problem until I added the Bus Access module to
buffer the pitch CV. Then the problem went away. Ditto for A156 -
produced pitch CV.

hmm, ok. thanks for the suggestion but i'm confused as to how i
would patch it in. does it work just being on the bus? so i start
drawing cv from the 185 instead of the 190?

I removed the jumper to break the connection from my A190 to the
bus, and patch the A190, or the A156, or whatever, to the A185
instead.

Hope that helps.

jumper?
i remember having to cut two metal links to stop the
a190 sending cv and gates to the system bus.

okay okay! Its two metal links. Sheesh! :-)

I tried to cut mine with a wire snip but they pulled right out of the
PCB instead.

I thought it would be a minor hassle having to patch the A190 to the
A185 so often, but this way you have a way to modify the pitch CV
before it's fed to the bus - for example, by patching it through a
slew limiter, or through a mixer so you can add LFO or a pitch
envelope. That's very clean and convenient compared to MULT'ing those
to all the VCOs. I do that sort of stuff often enough that now I
prefer the A190 -> A185 setup to the A190 hardwired bus connection.

i think that's what i'll do..snip the 190 from bus and patch to the
185 instead, makes perfect sense now.
thanks for your input.. now i'm glad i didn't accidentally put my
a171 under the back tire.
