Timeline Chart of Doepfer A-100 Modules?

Timeline Chart of Doepfer A-100 Modules?

2016-12-09 by Eric Frans

Hello!

This is my first post to this group. First off, I want to say thank you to Dieter for revitalizing the modular synthesizer with the Eurorack format and the A-100 system and modules! The quality, breadth, and price of Doepfer modules is tough to beat and sets a high standard for the many other makers in the industry now.

It's such a pleasure and an amazing experience to create music/sound by patching modules and turning knobs. The possibilities seem endless. Not to mention how nice it is to avoid the ever present computer in our lives.

I started my system in May this year by building my own case using the Doepfer DIY Kit #1. Thank you Dieter for providing this option to those of us willing to get our hands dirty. The system isn't entirely Doepfer, but of the 17 modules, 6 are Doepfer. Mutable Instruments is another favorite of mine. Here's a link to my modular planner:

Today I was thinking about how many Doepfer modules have been created (nearly 200) and the fact they've been created over roughly 20 years now. Further, I was thinking how interesting it would be to see a timeline chart devoted to Doepfer A-100 modules. Has someone already created this? I did a web search and looked through the files section in this group, but didn't see anything. I'm thinking x-axis is release date and y-axis is the number of newly introduced modules released. Color coding based on the category of module (A-100X, A-110X, etc.) would be interesting to include as well.

The system planner spreadsheet here has all the info needed except for a release date column:

For release date I was thinking month/year, but to get started we could skip month and just use year. I recognize that a bulk of the modules were released in the late 90's, but I still think the trend until now would be cool to see.

Anyway, sorry for the long post and I'm hoping others here might have an interest in this timeline chart idea. Please post back with your thoughts.

Thanks,
- Eric

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Timeline Chart of Doepfer A-100 Modules?

Ah, very good idea, thanks! I'd forgotten about the Wayback Machine. It says it has 105 instances of www.doepfer.de/a100.htm ranging from May 1997 to November 2016, so that will be very helpful. Examining which modules in the table have links seems to be the key. This should provide dates that will be fairly close and perhaps only a few months after the actual release dates.

Before I spend hours of detective work using the Wayback Machine, if anyone here has more exact release dates on the modules, please let me know. :-)

Thanks,
- Eric

Hello Eric,

thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately I don't have a list that tells
the release date of each module. I would have to comb through my records to
generate such a list. But that's a very time consuming process. I'll see if
I have time some day to do this. The very first modules were released end of
1995/early in 1996 and included these modules: A-110, A-114, A-115, A-116,
A-118, A-119, A-120, A-121, A-122, A-123, A-125, A-128, A-130, A-131,
A-138a/b, A-140, A-145, A-148, A-150, A-160, A-161, A-162, A-170, A175,
A-180, A-190. Some of the first basic modules were nothing but the
corresponding circuits of the MS-404 (e.g. A-110, A-118, A-120, A-130,
A-140, A-145).

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Timeline Chart of Doepfer A-100 Modules?

2016-12-09 by Zoë Blade

I must confess I'm intrigued by those early A-100 prototypes. There's a sliver of information (old scans of flyers and some reporting) over at http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/Doepfer/A-100/

I could have sworn I saw actual photos of the prototype modules somewhere, maybe your blog, Pierre? But couldn't retrace my steps just now, alas...

Doepfer, if you have any old flyers, leaflets, manuals, service notes, schematics or anything you'd like to be preserved, let me know. :)

This is everything I've managed to archive so far: https://archive.org/details/synthmanuals-doepfer

All the best,
Zoë.

Hi Dieter,

Thank you for your reply and the info about the first group of modules. It's great you still take time out to interact here on this list. Much appreciated by all here I'm sure. I can imagine those early years in the late 90's were a whirlwind! I'm guessing the pace is still fast today, but not as frantic as those early days. So I completely understand about not having compiled a release date list for each module. I'll see what I can piece together. :-)

Pay attention that this was a very preliminary information about the A-100.
The final module number and width of many modules has been changed.

That's what makes it so intriguing! :D

I did some more digging and found this photo of what appears to be a prototype A-150 LFO, although I don't know if it's legitimate: http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=48037&d=1243454799 Perhaps you can shed some light? :) Sorry, I just find prototypes interesting, that period when you were first brainstorming and tweaking what became the first A-100 modules.

Cheers,
Zoë.

Sorry - I can't remember this prototype. In any case it's not my bathroom
:-)
And I cannot remember that we ever had frames with black side panels.
I suppose it's a picture taken by a customer who purchased the prototype and
also built the DIY multiple (?) on the right side. The other modules seem to
be regular ones.

I should imagine the Doepfer Bathroom is much nicer!! And fully modular.

I thought the build quality of the Mult didn't match up with the rest,

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Timeline Chart of Doepfer A-100 Modules?

2016-12-26 by Eric Frans

Merry Xmas to everyone here!

As a present of sorts (to those of you interested :) I've compiled all the release dates for the A-100 modules. In the Files section you'll find a folder I created called "A100 Modules Timeline". In the folder are three .png files showing the timeline graphically in various ways (tally, cumulative by category, and cumulative all). The folder also contains an Excel workbook with a table of all the release dates and the references I used.

The dates are approximations based on the best information I could find and are meant to represent the released modules, not prototypes.

If you have corrections, please let me know. Thanks.

Subject: Re: [Doepfer_a100] Timeline Chart of Doepfer A-100 Modules?

    Merry Xmas to everyone here!

As a present of sorts (to those of you interested :) I've compiled all the release dates for the A-100 modules. In the Files section you'll find a folder I created called "A100 Modules Timeline". In the folder are three .png files showing the timeline graphically in various ways (tally, cumulative by category, and cumulative all). The folder also contains an Excel workbook with a table of all the release dates and the references I used.

The dates are approximations based on the best information I could find and are meant to represent the released modules, not prototypes.

If you have corrections, please let me know. Thanks.

   - Eric
