Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 (+ ES-8)

Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 (+ ES-8)

2018-09-09 by Diego Ragnini

Hello,
Sorry if today I am trying to find answers about modules which are not Doepfer, I frankly guess that this list users can be more helpful than ES customer service. Moreover, due to my eyesight flaw, I barely can watch details on video tutorials which often are pedantic and verbose.

I am intended to replicate an MS-20 typical patch on eurorack: audio signal driving a VCO and/or some MIDI instruments (external MIDI gear as well as software MIDI instrument, i.e. plug-ins).

The MS-20 features a unique Ext Signal Processor which treats the audio signal properly in order to finally output cv and gates. Of course, it cannot be used to drive eurorack VCO’s 1V/Oct input (exponential), since it delivers Hz/V (linear) and I didn’t find a reliable eurorack module for this job.

I think I have 2 options.

1) the first would be to keep using the MS-20 Ext Signal Processor and to translate the Hz/V into the 1V/Oct by means of the linear/exponential converter featured by the Disting Mk4.

2) the second option would be, overriding the MS-20 ESP, to use the pitch&envelope tracker, also featured by the Disting Mk4.
This second options seems preferable to me, freeing the MS-20 ESP for other applications.

Am I right?

In both cases, I also need to translate the 1V/Oct into MIDI pitch and the gates into MIDI notes.
Can I take these signals (the envelope tracker output should be further treated via a comparator in order to obtain gates) from the Disting MK4 and send them to the Mac via the Expert Sleepers ES-8 inputs? If yes, what Expert Sleepers plug-in (from the Silent Way Suite) should I consider in order to get the job properly done?

Moreover, how could I translate the differences in amplitude of the original audio signal into MIDI velocity? Is this possible?

Best regards,

Diego

Ther are ar least two linear to expo converters in Euro rack that I know of, and if I am not mistaken there is also one in the Disting 4!
Harvestman (now known as IME) do the English Tear (weird name) which coincidentally was designed to interface MS20s and other Hz/v synths to modular, and Ladik also have one in their catalogue - U201, well documented on the website ladik.eu
Hope that helps you solve the issue.

Just checked the Disting 4 manual for the latest firmware - have a look at algorithm A-5 for the converter.

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 (+ ES-8)

I’d rather say this one

Bank 1 / Group 2:
Linear / exponential converter
Moreover, do you probably use the ES-8?
I would like to know if it can manage voltages in order to control MIDI virtual synth or external MIDI sound generators… and if yes, which Silent way plug-ins should be involved in the patch for this purpose.

Best, Diego
