Doepfer

I agree with Andreas. I started with the A100 because it was the only
cost effective module on the market and had a number of different
modules available.
 
Today my A100 is 92 modules strong but is supplemented by RS, Concussor,
MOTM, Oakley Soundsystems, Digisound and EFM modules.
 
Once I was up to nearly 12U of A100 and had started to understand the
concepts of modulars, my appreciation for other companies spec's grew
hence the diversity.
 
The only problem I have with my modular is that I tend not to multi
track record with it, I prefer to have pieces run in real-time, hence
there are never enough modules.
 
Oh well, just have to buy some more : )

	For my own part I began buying Doepfer just beacuse back in -95
I didn't
	know any other alternative for expensive secondhand moogs and
rolands and
	the ever so expensive Serge. Now the case isn't so clear anymore
with analog
	systems, motm, and synthesizer.com (which I might prefer today
if I would
	start all over due to the bigger jacks and general build
quality).
	
	As for shaltwerk I wouldn't go that way myself... The "werks"
are in my
	opinion a bit of a forgotten case of doepfer gear. I think you
will be
	better off with the A155. But by all means don't just take my
advice on that
	one I am more than a bit biased on that part.

I thank everyone so far that has offered advice on this purchase.  I 
admit that I was intending on being "loyal" in the beginning to get 
accustomed to owning a modular system.  But I'm already eyeing 
modules from other manufacturers.  Of course, the question is how 
well they integrate - something I'm sure I'll learn over time by 
working with my own system and asking questions.

One day, that would be my goal.  For me, this is only the beginning 
of something new.  I have no intention on buying a group of modules 
and then leaving it at that!  :-)  I just want to make sure I get the 
most mileage from my first choices before I'll need to expand further.

I have no issues with multi-tracking!  But then again, I also have no 
issues with buying more modules.  It already "seems" like I bought 
all the software plug-ins in the world.  I think its time I turned 
that buying energy back towards something of substance.  I am certain 
that building a modular system will provide plenty of joy for years 
to come.

Reading about what John wants to do with his system I just couldn't help
opening the planner and drawing up what I would have started with now with
the experience I now have. I also wanted a system for experimentation and
doing stuff my digitals couldn't do when I began and maybe the term wrong is
to strong but there certainly are some modules that I have not used that
much. So I just put in the modules that I use the most here in my sketch. I
know some guys will propagate for more LFOs, more ADSRs and such and I sure
hope you do. The advice that I always finds most useful is the kind of
advice that goes with a motivation.

My sketchsystem here only have one thing in plenty and that is soundsources.
Why? Well I do a lot of sounds from a clean cratch system and I always find
it useful to first just set up a few waveforms and see how they interact.
The A110 I just left out cause I honestly don't like them. As goes for the
rest of my system here I have gone for variation. It is always good to have
many colors in you palette right from the start. You never miss stuff more
than that you have never tried ;) Finally there is intentionally left a gap
to fill just cause I think it is a good idea have some room to fill when you
realized (that Andreas fellow was so off I need two more ADSRs) what modules
you need more off. Of course you can just buy another frame for this
purpose. And if you should be true to this approach you should make it one
A111 from the start, but really that is only like a 3/4s VCO without sync
and FM possibilities.
