would you be interested in yet another filter module???

would you be interested in yet another filter module???

2003-06-11 by Bakis Sirros

hi list,
dieter doepfer asked me to ask the group,if there is
any interest in yet another filter module(we're
talking about the ms20 filter or the arp2600
filter...).
i know i'm not!well,if doepfer releases such a filter
AFTER the
a107,a154,a133,a149-1,a149-2,a149-3,TKS,a172,vactrols,other
chaos modules....i may buy it. ;-)

I think there are plenty of filters when then planned ones are released...
if any filters then I'd say something unusual like VCS3 or something, but
nahh.. I am fine ;)

A 2600 Filter would be VERY excellent.

Hi!

I would like a tube VCF and VCO but I guess it's out of the question. Metasonix has a bandpass VCF but I would prefer a lowpass and the Doepfer look-and-feel :-) Otherwise, the Arp filter sounds interesting.

ARP 2600 filter? Wow! For sure I´m interested!! :-)
The MS20 filter is a nice one, too but there´s already the SY02 from
Analogue Solutions (
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~concuss/concussor/sy02.htm ). I
thought Doepfer doesn´t want to develop other companies already produce
(besides of standard modules like VCOs, LFOs or EGs).

Every module is exciting in the right hands... or at least under the
control of a twisted mind.

2003-06-11 by Bakis Sirros

hi andreas,
i can't tell that is very similar really....
but it is ,indeed ,different and interesting!
i have the a102 diode filter and a diode filter very
early prototype that(according to dieter)wasn't
sounding as they wanted it to sound, but i like it
too!it's resonance knob operates in reverse!max
resonance in the 0 position, min resonance in the 10
position!so,it's quite wierd!
bakis.

Re: would you be interested in yet another filter module???

2003-06-12 by selfoscillate

hello bakis,

same with me, i want the other modules like a154 and a149 first,
but nevertheless i would buy an arp2600 type filter.
i also like the ms20 filters very much, but there already is
a good ms20 filter module available from analogue solutions.

... but in the end, i think i would buy any filter from doepfer.
oh man, i lost my sanity :-)

best wishes

ingo

Re: would you be interested in yet another filter module???

2003-06-12 by selfoscillate

hello andreas,

i don't think it is a real clone, it just uses the same
filter technique. the a102 sounds really different when
compared with a rs500e ems filter (made by analogue systems).

bakis, what would you say? you have a vcs3, right?

best wishes

ingo

hello bakis,

me too, but i already have a sy02 filter and i have to say,
that this one is really good. if doepfer developes such
a ms20 filter, it should go beyond the possibilities of
the sy02 (vc of resonance, normaled inputs for both
lowpass and highpass stages and so on).

best wishes

hello florian,

you mean the synthacon filter, made by cyndustries.

http://www.cyndustries.com/

a really interesting design, looks very promising.

regarding the ms20, i don't use it very often as a synthesizer.
i use it mainly for tweaking external signals. for this purpose
it is a great tool. strong coloring :-)
a matter of taste, just like everything.

best wishes

ingo

hi ingo,
if i had to buy an ms20 filter module, i would very
much prefer to buy it from doepfer!as this is my
monster modular,i have space for this filter!in my
concussor, i would prefer to fill the remaining 6U
with sequencing modules and wavetable vco's.

hi again,
i agree with you on this!the a102 sounds like a diode
filter(that's good!).not like a vcs3.the rs500e sounds
like the vcs3!well,it's 18db version does,at least,as
i have a vcs3 mk1 with a 18 db filter.about the 24db
filter version of the rs500e,i guess it sounds like
the post-1974 vcs3mk2...

I would be interested in a dedicated filter, but I forgot, from which
industrial synth it is derived: basically it is a 12dB multimode filter,
but instead of having three outputs for the different filter types it
provides only one output for all, but different inputs for the three filter
types. You can use this filter mixing different signial not via a level,
but via frequency. Should sound very interesting.

I personally find the MS20 sound always very(!) boring.

hi florian,
that's wierd!i love the sound of the filters of my
ms20's!but,about the arp2600...what is it's difference
compared to the filter of my arp odyssey????i have the
gold and black version and the filter is nice, but not
anything special....
what makes the arp2600 filter so special?and about
what arp2600 filter we're talking about?as i
think, that different versions of arp2600's have
different filters.....

Yes, that´s right. The early versions ("Blue Meanie" and "Grey Meanie")
had a Moog lowpass filter clone. After a law-suit between Moog and ARP
they changed the filter design. The new filer was used in the black
2600s with white lettering and in the orange-black onesand it is said to
sound a little duller than the Moog VCF clone.

Doepfer probably thinks of the later filter design.

Maybe this has already been covered,
but, the Moog filter is the 4012 and
the non-Moog is the 4072. Personally,
the 4072 - when done properly is actually
the more interesting of the two filters.

4072s suffered from a trucated frequency
response due to miscalculated resistors.
A simple mod to the 4072 restores the full
frequency showing off the glory of the 4072.

Why build the 4012 anyway, it is just a moog
clone to begin with.

I uploaded a schematic for the 4072 to files section.

Yeah, I've got a 2600 with a 4012 (24dB/Oct) filter, and really dig the
character of that filter, but I've never played with the later filter.

I'd almost rather Doepfer make a clone of the later filter (after all the
other stuff in prototype, obviously) than the earlier one, since that way
I could choose which rev of the 2600 I'm using ;0)

Not just the meanies had them. The early grey face/tolex 2600s, the ones
with square-looking speaker areas, usually had the moog clone filters as
well. Some, but not many, of the later round looking speaker 2600s had
them too (this is what I have). The orange/white and black 2600s don't
have them
unless as a later upgrade from CMS.

Part of the reason it sounds duller is a design error that limits the top
cutoff, this can be corrected by changing some parts around the circuit
that the module plugs into. The CMS site has details on this.

> Doepfer probably thinks of the later filter design.

That seems likely, yes, since that's what most people will think of when
you say "ARP filter".
