Josef,

I think that this is a great idea. A central repository for all things A100 is wonderful.

Thanks

David

Hi folks,

your very good ideas inspired me to create two new sites for the
Modular-Planet:

http://www.Modular-Planet.de/tips&tricks.html

http://www.Modular-Planet.de/modifications.html

But I don`t know if you agree to this plan.

What do you think about this idea?

Greetings

Josef

Re: Tips & Tricks / Modifications

Hi Josef

Florian's suggestions are excellent! I like his categories much better
than "Tips and Tricks", and I strongly agree that much of the material
will need further elaboration (not only for hardware modifications but
for the other categories as well). I also agree that the information
needs to be collected first, before it can be organized and clarified.

I congratulate you for creating the beginnings of an excellent
resource, and I congratulate you for soliciting feedback and
suggestions.

In that spirit, let me say again that suggestions for improvising
makeshift multiples and makeshift CV sources is fun, but as guidance
to new A100 users it's bad advice, more like "tricks" than "tips".
Using high-value modules for mundane utility tasks isn't really that
clever. Better advice would be to make sure you have enough A180s, and
to buy the friggin' CV source module if you need to do that kind of
thing. A basic set of tools is important!

People who are new to modular synthesis have a difficult job designing
a good A100 module configuration, and need good advice instead of
tricks. I know, I was one of them not long ago!

Regards

Joe

Hi Joe,

> but as guidance to new A100 users it's bad advice

the Modular-Planet is not a guidance! It's only a collection of
A-100-patches. You can make a tour on the planet and hear all the
sounds. I think the Tips-collection is also only a collection.

> People who are new to modular synthesis

If you search for a guidance, take the best: Allen Strange! In german
language there are several books (also suitable for beginners):
Florian Anwander: Synthesizer, Hans Ulrich Humpert: Elektronische
Musik, André Ruschkowski: Elektronische Klänge und musikalische
Entdeckungen, Reinhard Schmitz: Analoge Klangsynthese
and so on...
Web-sites with guidance for beginners:
http://home.snafu.de/sicpaul/tpf_syn0.htm
http://www.analog-synth.de/emu/workshop/modsyn.htm
and so on...

Why not?

A-119-user's guide:
"These two sockets are simply linked as a "mini-multiple"."
http://www.doepfer.com/a100_man/a119_man.htm

A-165-user's guide:
"so it's possible to use these two inputs as a mini-multiple - using
one of them to send the original trigger to another module."
http://www.doepfer.com/a100_man/a165_man.htm

A-175-user's guide:
"you can use the second socket as a mini-multiple."
http://www.doepfer.com/a100_man/a175_man.htm

What is 'basic'?
A few months ago I created a organ-sound-patch in additive manner.
Because I only own four VCOs (for the sine-waves), I took other
sources to that: LFOs with high frequencies, self-oscillation
filters, the sine-output from my frequency-counter, (the cry from
neighbor's baby) ...
What from this patch is a "mundane utility task" ;-) ?

Greetings

Josef

I made a pass through all of the postings so far, and extracted
interesting stuff that would be good candidates. Click on the
"Database" link to the left of this page to see the results. The
postings can be sorted by module, description, author, and category
(I
made categories up as I was going along).

Anyone feel free to add to these, or revise them.
