a155 external audio/cv inputs?

a155 external audio/cv inputs?

2005-03-10 by Paul Wagorn

Hey all:

The 155 seems to have all sorts of interesting possibilities hidden in it's
corners. The external inputs for each step seem to be one of those things
that you sort of go "wow. imagine the possibilities" at.

Problem is, I can't really think of a good use for having a signal show up
on one step of an 8 step sequence, with an attenuator.

What does everyone use this for mostly? I'm sure there are some crazy
things, but damned if I can think of anything practical that can't be done
with a simple vca..

well....as an example take 8 different oscillators ,plug one into each
step....plug track output into fm input of another vco :)

basically like a sequential switch with attenuators.

Hmm great idea. Now I need more oscillators ;)

that's a statement that is always true for every modularsynth-geek on
the face of this planet...

i _NEED_MORE_OSCILLATORS

(you may exchange "oscillators" for "filters","mixers","envelopes" or
for the more general "modules"...the latter is what i always tell my
girlfriend;) )

but where it gets really crazy is when you use a cv to select the step
in such a setup. i.e. use the sawtooth ouput of the VCO you're
modulating to select the active step; this way you will
have up to 8 different modulator waveforms within 1 cycle of the
carrier (or you could think of it as a single modulator with variable
frequency/spectrum). be carefull with the modulation intensity though,
this is obviously a feedback loop and tends to be rather..unstable
(which may be exactly what one likes about this approach ;) ). maybe
modulate pw at audiorate instead to break the loop, will give similar
results but leaves the saw-output unchanged.
oh yeah...if you take the output of one of the trigger-rows to sync up
all the oscillators you can avoid clicks due to non-zero values when
steps are switched (since the trigger signal will force them to start
at 0V)...at least theoretically (and probably only for sines and
triangles).

Tell me about it. somehow I have to justify adding onto 2 different
modulars. I have a hard enough time justifying it to myself! :-)

Beside the already mentioned examples:
1.) Use the analysis module of the vocoder (A-129/1), use the different
control signal "bands" as sources for the sequencer, use a synchronized
drummachine as analysis signal, use the sequenced control voltage for
any kind of modulation (very good: FM or wave shaping)

2.) I use it with a customized Boss graphic EQ, which offers a single
output for each band; I feed the single outs to different mixers and
feed either the mixers outputs or the single outs to steps of the
sequencer.

Since I do not really need pots for the mix, I already thought about
building some kind of switch matrix mixer for the EQ.
